The bar kept slipping away, even with I had straps. I tried using hooks, but they make my grip awkward and I don't get a good grip with em either.

I'm using cotton straps. At the fitness store, there were several kinds, I chose cotton cuz they were the cheapest. I though it was cheaper cuz it work last as long. Do the other material straps give a better grip?

Your whole arms will benefit if you just lower the weight to accomodate the grip. Generally, the smaller muscles will recover faster than the bigger ones, so it shouldn't be too long before your forearms catch up, and then they won't hold you back any longer (and they'll start exploding in size too).
