how are some of you overcoming a failing grip as you go up in weight with your deadlift...my hands/fingers are giving out before my back.

There are a bunch of grip exercises you can find by doing a google search. Or you can get heavy grippers, which are spring grippers like you would find at wal-mart only instead of 50 or 75 pounds they start at 100 and go up to a whopping 500lbs of force needed to close them! I got a set of 5 ranging from 100 - 300lbs for 60 bucks! Farmers walk will also take it's toll on your forearms.

straps or hooks. Hooks won't workout your forearms though. You'll still get a forearm workout with straps.

try a mixed or alternating grip (one hand overhand, the other underhand) when doing deadlifts, and work on your forearms on a day you're not already doing deadlifts. easiest & cheapest way to beat up your forearms is to do farmer's walks (pick up the heaviest pair of dumbbells from a rack, walk away until you can't stand it, pick 'em up again and walk back). straps are fine for very heavy weight, but they work by reducing the load on your forearms, which is a double-edged sword.

I do my warm up sets with a double overhand grip and my work sets with an alternating grip. It seems to be working so far. I'm only up to 320 lbs for 5 reps though.

depends
you MAY use straps, for the last set only.
otherwise you need to work on your grip.
