Ok. I'm about to start working on getting into shape, and I need to know: is it generally recommended to do a cutting cycle before bulking or vice versa? I fall into the morbidly obese category (BMI: 41.7%) and losing weight is obviously the top priority. However, I've heard that having large amounts of muscle aids in the weight loss process. So, what should I do first? Cut or bulk?

Cut. It'll get easier to do the weight training when you're carrying less baggage. With the BMI you posted you'll see some pretty sweet changes quite fast, if you control your diet and keep to a regular cardio schedule. Hit up a gym too, get a workout schedule and stick to it. Keep these exercises in mind and find out how to do them: Squats, Deadlifts, Bench press.

Post an update on here once a week to keep yourself motivated and on track.(weight, BMI)
Write down EVERYTHING you do in the gym as well, its a BIG motivation boost to see the improvements you are making.

Keeping to a gym or exercise routine is very hard(atleast for me), its all about how much you want the changes. Just stop and think for a minute, right now....think to yourself how much you want the changes....

Sorry for my blunt honesty my friend.

But you asked the exact same question more than 3 years ago here:
http://www.sosuave.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22507

And all you managed to accomplish in three and half years was passing from "chubby" to "morbidly obese"???

I think the very first thing you need is to get the huge determination to actually exercise regularly during a long time frame(you will probably need years to get in shape), before knowing whether you need to "cut or bulk first".:nervous:

Anyway, just to answer the question, of course you need to cut first, and right now!

Depends on how much you weigh. 170 and above-cut. 140 and below-bulk.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. FYI, I did attempt for about two years following that post to lose weight. I saw no results, got fed up, and quit my routine. I recently found out, however, that the reason I saw no results then was because I have a thyroid disease. I'm being treated for the condition now and my doc says that if I start a weight loss regimen now I should see more success than before.

As far as the cutting vs bulking question goes, I just simply forgot what the original answer was. :p

Sorry to hear that man.

What's great is that now you know what was wrong, and it's being treated.

Yes, first cut. And you never know, maybe after cutting you won't like being that buff after all. Maybe you will like to be fit and lean so bulking just a little afterwards would suffice.

i just dont get why people actually quit if they don't see results straight away,

basically the way to think is if you, in fact do decide to quit then you KNOW you wont get anywhere, if you carry on then in the long run you will lose weight and look good!

just keep going regardless of whether you think your progressing or not!

After working out and dieting for two ****ing years and gaining weight throughout the process...yeah I got frustrated and quit. I later found out that with the disease it was physiologically impossible for me to lose weight. :p

Did the doctor say whether you were always diabetic? Maybe you overate bad carbs or something and it changed you into a diabetic.

At this point you probably have a woman (or multiple women) chasing you around, calling you all the time, wanting to be with you. So let's talk about how to KEEP a woman interested in you once you have her. This is BIG! There is nothing worse than getting dumped by a woman that you really, really like.

Let's pretend I was 195 at 7% bodyfat. Would I cut?
Also, what about the people in the 141lbs-169lbs range? Do they just sit there?

"Bulking" and "Cutting" are two useless phrases to me. It's all based upon how you look. Want to get bigger? Lean Bulk. Want to get smaller? Lean Up. Simple.

Enough with this bulk OR cut stuff. you CAN do both. I have to a small degree, with improper diet.

As to the main question, you my friend, need to just exercise. I wouldn't worry about bulking or cutting. Eat 5 or 6 smaller meals (MEALS not snacks) a day. Get your exercise in. Weightlift AND do some high intensity cardio. The weight will come off and you will get stronger, you will have more energy etc.

Also, look into the Paleo Diet. Helps people all over the place lean up.
