For credit cards, use them to rack up a balance for things you would buy anyway and at the same time save the cash, and then carry the balance for a month or two. Then pay it off with the money you saved and when it is near zero, ask for a higher limit. Then repeat the process with larger sums. A month or two of interest is worth the help to your credit.

Lenders report when you are 30, 60, and 90 days overdue. 29 days late does not get reported, but 31 will, no matter how much you complain. Phone and utility bills don't impact your credit until you have a very overdue balance that is sent to collections.

Stay away from department store credit cards, unless it says Visa or Mastercard on it. They tend to hurt more than help.

Open up an account, bank or department store. But something cheap, pay it off, and then keep the card open.
Always pay above the minimum amount due.
And be really use good judgement and discretion when you buy big ticket items. Buy it, and pay it off.

More important is to not ruin your credit. Its pretty hard to build up good credit after it has gone bad. Pay your stuff on time.
