Check your diet.
Diet?

I believe it's a combination of stretching and just getting used to running. It takes time before your muscles are adapted to long distance running.

I have the same problem! No matter how much water and healthy food i eat, i still get cramps without fail.

Ive even tried very light meals an hour or more before running.

Ive been running 2 miles everyother day for the last two months... maybe i need another few months before i get used to it?

When I get a cramp, I run through it, and it goes away after a few minutes.

Once you run for long enough, and the endorphines begin to be released, the pain should go away.

my football coach told me in a long running session that cramps happen when your unfit... didn't really know what he meant though, he also told us to all run through it and said that if I was getting chased by gangsters and i got a cramp i'd still keep running otherwise i'd die, so now whenever i run i imagine 5 gangsters chasing me with knives

anyways I tend not to get cramps unless I drank too much water 1 or less hours before the exercise

I get bad cramps in my abdominal area after an extremely long amount of running. But more often, when I play basketball I get them in my lower back and it hurts like hell, I can't move when I get them and it's almost hard for me to breathe. I sit down, it hurts, I try to lie down, it hurts more. So I just have to sit completely still until it goes away.

Cramps that occur while active can be because of insufficient blood supply to the tissue, dehydration, muscle fatigue, or mineral depletion. Also bad positioning could be to blame, but not likely.

Do a search for "stitch in the side".

You should not eat any less than 2 hours be4 a workout(be it weights or cardio). If you do, you may feel bloating, cramps or general discomfot. Sounds like this is probably your problem
