Considering Joining the NAVY

This is actually a question to those who have served in the U.S. Navy. My career options seem to be somewhat limited in this economy even with a degree. For a solid future with great benefits and all the perks, the Navy seems like the best route to choose. My only concern is all the time on the ship. However, I'm told that you get to travel and have a chance to party and get laid all around the world. What's life like in the Navy and will I get more or less chances with women?

Honestly everyone I've talked to in the Navy said they hated it. All they did the whole time was clean the ship and do stupid drills.

I can personally vouch for the Air Force if you just wanna travel and have a somewhat normal job. Plus everyone knows the Air Force girls are the hottest.....:p lol

air force anyway...
why?
you'll stay on land more than you would if you in the navy..trust me, after 6 months of the ships motion, you cant stand straight on land..
you'll do more fun stuff, like learn to fly, instead of learn to do drills and clean the decks..
you'll have the opportunity to hit mach 1 mach 2 sound barrier breaking speeds.
the girls love airforce pilots..alphas in the sky i suppose.
like the previous poster said, air force girls are HOTTTT

Learn to fly? Youve got to be an officer to fly. Travel? Dont bet on it-you could get stuck at one base.
Air Force girls are hot? Id say theres hot girls in every branch though they are rare and the few hot ones you come across will have guys lined up to get them. Im in the USAF currently and Im actually in the process of switching to the Army.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

Yea like fuzzx said dont join for women. Joining the military is a life-changing decision. Civilians dont realize all the things people in the military have given up just to do what we do.

Can you give some examples of the differences between civilian and military life? What's sacrificed? What are the rewards?

IMO, there's only one good reason to join the military service; patriotism and service to country. That's it. And thank you to all who do this.

Otherwise, there are far safer jobs out there that pay just as much and require so much less of you. And setting aside dollars while you work instead of spending.... call that a GI bill.

Won't be so glamourous when you're shot down behind enemy lines being tortured in a POW camp.

I'm by no means an anti-military guy at all, but I don't think military life should be glamourized. The bottom line is, when you join the military, you are in the business of killing. Maybe you'll get lucky and there won't be any war while you are serving, but if you're not so lucky, you will either kill or be killed and maybe see your good friends and comrades die. Let's not forget that that's what the military is all about.

I served 6 years in the Navy. While I was in, I hated it. In hindsight though, I am very glad that I served and it gave me direction in my life. I know exactly what I want to do and what I want out of life and I am currently working towards those goals. One thing about being deployed is it teaches you really quickly what is actually important to you in your life. Your values will change from what you thought they originally were, at least in my case.

I spent 4 and a half years on a nuclear carrier. For 2 of those years I was out to sea. It wasn't like a continuous 2 years though. Ships in the Navy go through "work-up" cycles where they will be in out of port for a few months like every couple weeks preparing for the deployment then they will eventually deploy for 6 months.

You will travel in the Navy. That is no BS. In my 4.5 years on my ship, I hit Brazil, Chile, Peru, Hawaii x 3, Guam, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong x 2, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and United Arab Emirates. You can party in those ports, but there are rules. The higher your rank though, the fewer rules apply to you. The lower ranks have curfews and stuff like that. On one of the days in a foreign port you will have to stand a "duty day" which is basically like a 24 hour shift on the ship where you have to stay on the ship to keep things running or you can bribe someone like I always did to take your duty day.

Let me touch on the getting laid thing. Look, going overseas is a blast. You realize how uptight and puritanical Americans are about sexuality compared to the rest of the world. When I first went to Rio, I was extremely sheltered. I went into this titty bar and there was this one stripper walking around giving BJs to random dudes as part of her show. I went upstairs at this joint and it was a total orgy. There were like 15 people in there ****ing. Notice the odd number? There was a little "eiffel tower" action going on hehe...Anything went there, like no holds barred. You could finger the dancers then give them 50 cents lol...You probably won't get laid overseas though unless it is with a prostitute. I have buddies that got laid with real chicks, but it is rare. You will be greeted by masses of *****s in every port. It's hilarious, they will come up to you like in that movie "Full Metal Jacket" like "me so hony, me wub you wong time"...

I never wore my uniform out in public because I didn't really like that much attention, but I had to on a few occasions. If you wear your uniform out to a bar or some place in a nonmilitary town, I guarantee you will never pay for a drink or a meal. Women and men will be approaching you all night like a conveyor belt just to shoot the **** with you and buy you stuff. Women also will throw their ***** out there so shamelessly. It is good times.

If you have anymore questions let me know!

Don't always be the one putting yourself out for her. Don't always be the one putting all the effort and work into the relationship. Let her, and expect her, to treat you as well as you treat her, and to improve the quality of your life.

I was in the Navy, wasnt that big of a fan, but I joined pretty late and its DEFINATELY a young mans game.

* Good money and perks.
* Fvck all chicks worth nobbing, the ones in rate themselves 3 points higher just through scarcity, and most seem to get a hefty sized NIA (navy issued ass).
* Good chances of travel.
* Chicks love a sailor.
* Enjoy your loneliness.
* Lots of weirdos and an unsettling amount of AFC culture.
* Some awesome guys with a strong sense of commeraderie, always got your back.
* Good food and plenty of it.
* Sleep is precious.
* Cheaper food and piss, and tax free smokes.

If your under...say 22ish? go for it mate.

I'm thinking of joining the Australian navy just to travel for a couple of years.
What are the odds of actually getting in a conflict. I don't want to actually shoot anyone.
