Hello

I want to start this by saying i was a competitive boxer for a number of years, and while i seldom fight these days, ive stayed on the regimen, and i can tell you, its the ultimate for being in shape, looking in shape, and feeling good about yourself.

If fighting isnt your thing, dont let it deter you, you can still participate in the entire workout and get incredible results. You can find boxing gyms everywhere, some decent, some not. But if you can find a decent one, i highly recommend you participate in this great sport. It will do your body more good than you can imagine.

HS, good tip. I've been wanting to actually join a boxing gym for some time now. Any good tips for finding/qualifying a good gym? I think boxing's a great sport actually. It's something I've wanted to do for awhile now. Any tips would be appreciated.

For fitness level, I most lift weights but consider myself in fairly good shape.

Sure do. You know, the gyms i used to go to were not in the nicest of neighborhoods, and to be honest, the more legitimate boxing gyms tend to be in the more underprivliged areas. So the better gyms will tend to be more toward the city. But you could probably make do with any gym that is just BOXING. Not kickboxig and not martial arts gyms, completly different sports in their own right, you need to find a place that caters to boxing only, and many of the boxing gyms also have their own workout equipment, so you can have your secondary gym there. Just look around the area and visit places that claim to be boxing gyms and check them out. If theres a lot of little kids, no ring with people doing no contact sparring (ive seen it its a shame) or martial arts and yoga going on in the other room, avoid it. Find a place thats all boxing. Let me know if you find something good!

Haha..actually the one boxing gym I was thinking about...is in a bad neighborhood, and just cators to boxing. Almost like a Rocky Balboa gym. I haven't worked up the nerve to go in there, but I will now.

Thanks! Good tip.

mma is also an intense workout. Some guys on here train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as well. Along with boxing, these are great ways to get in shape.

I always wanted to try it, mainly to toughen up (we got one of those underclass things here), but I got contacts and know from experience that they come flying out from even the slightest punch to the face :D
Taking them out is out of question as I am blind as an owl.

I hear ya, I want to box just to know how many punches I can take. I've boxed once before, took a beating, but threw a right and took my opponent off his feet with one punch. I know I can hit hard. I want to know how hard I can get hit. ;)

Taking a punch boils a lot of the times down to your experience and mentality. If you go in with the mentality that you just CANNOT be hurt, and truley convince yourself of that (not possible to do without quite a bit of fighting experience already), then youre ahead of the game already. Having a strong chin is a bit of a god-given gift, but a lot of the great chins were great because of their strong minds. Research a boxer named Jake Lamotta, he was the guy they wrote they movie "raging bull" about. He was regarded as having the best chin ever in boxing, and as far as im concerned, hes one of the toughest men who ever lived. Theres a few interviews with him where he admits he actually hypnotized himself into believeing no one could hurt him. He truley believed you could not hurt him, and he claims he was never hurt. Granted, him being a psychopath played a factor in his bloodlust, but what he says makes sense. A lot of it is in your mind.

I trained boxing (one fight), muay thai and MMA for over 5 years. It made me look like a rake! I was eating like the garbage disposal and still loosing weight. Your coach will always be hammering you to lose weight. Give it a go if you're a fatty.

It all depends on your genetics. If your a skinny guy looking to put on some beef, stay away! Join a powerlifting gym.

I trained once at the nearest boxing gym, and I can attest to what you guys are saying. Pretty intense, loved every second of it. I can only attend it after 08' Summer, though, when I go study near it.

What's interesting, is that after I mention I'd like to pick-up boxing, everyone is quick to jump on me, telling me about brain damage and whatnot. After checking some articles on the Internet, I got kinda worried, but I'd like to hear some first-hand opinions about it, guys.

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.

I was on the figting circuit for quite some time, and while ive seen a few guys suffering from a bit of brain damage, its not going to just happen to you overnight. Chances are if youre just doing it for fitness and maybe a little sparring here and there, youll never get hit hard enough or beaten over a long period of time, and thats what really makes someone "punch drunk" if you will. Being beaten by heavy punches over a long, sustained period of time is what can lead to brain damage. If youre just doing it casually and maybe lightly fighting here and there brain damage isnt a concern. I will warn you though, youre liable to mess your nose up if you arent careful, i was fortunate (emphasis on fortunate) to have kept mine in good shape. Hope this helps!

I got a heavybag for my basement a few months ago and I enjoy the workouts. I think I'll just train on that instead of joining the boxing gym down the road. Figured I can just spend the money on concerts and live MMA events. Those boxing gyms do have social benefits though.

I just started boxing so here is my opinion. It’s good for fitness and over all strength, if you want to get big, I would lay off it. However if your looking to get cut and athletic and learn something about being a bad ass go for it. By the way, if anyone is worrying about head injuries I would recommend trying Amateur Boxing (like what they do in the Olympics) instead of Professional. Amateur you wear head gear and have extra padding on your gloves, its based more on points then actually trying to knock out your opponent.
