Hey Guys,

My studio PC is down, and I need to wipe it clean. Before doing so, i need to back up some projects. I have a removable/swappable drive thing, that I can use to quickly pop in a fresh harddrive. All the HD's I have are full, so I bought a new one. It's an IDE ATA100 drive by Western Digital, but windows is seeing it as a SCSI drive. None of my other drives have this problem, so I can't format it. I keep getting an error when I try and format it (the error occurs right when the format is almost complete) The jumper settings are correct, so I'm kinda baffled.

Any ideas?

Any websites I could go to, that might be able to help?

Thanx,

The Bad Ass Canadian

reinstall windows, and when you are done, download easy recovery pro. It will allow you to go back and recover everything you formatted.

xp and xp pro sometimes recognizes your hard drives as scsi if you are running RAID, even though they're ATA or SATA drives. are you? it doesn't matter though.

since you are able to start the formatting, but it pops at the end, it's likely you got a bumb HD, probably a bad sector. run a full surface scan on it, if you want to take the time. but i think you've got a bad one.

btw, my brand spanking new WJ 300GB SATA drive took a cr@p on me within one hour!

there's no need to reinstall windows or recover anything. all you need to do is back up your current data, before you wipe it, right?

Yeah, I'm using windows XP Pro with SP1.

I reformatted my drive and fixed the issue with that particular harddrive.... Now, I'm having loads of troubles. Something in this fvcker is not setup right. I've been getting some errors, on a clean install. It's pretty weird. Ran Prime95 before and everything passed perfectly. Tried it again, and didn't even pass the first test.... I think I need a PC doctor to check this thing out.

It's a Gigabyte GA-81815 P Duo Pro W/ 2 gigs of DDR2 Ram

Anyone familliar with these boards?

How would I connect 2 Hardrives, a CDR drive and a DVD drive to this thing? What would be the settings as far as Slave and Master, and where should they be connected? The instructions that came with the thing weren't very clear.

I'm getting pissed off, because I'm losing time and energy when I could be getting some real work done.

I just might rip the whole thing apart and start from the ground up.

The only thing I'm fearing is that the MOBO is no good/ defective.... It's only a couple of months old, and I've been getting nonpaged_default errors and the likes pretty regularly.

My blood pressure is through the roof, right now haha...

reinstall windows until it comes clean. IMMEDIATELY get sp2--it's basically a new os, xp pro sp2 should be rock solid. if you have problems, it's a hardware issue. IMMEDIATELY get all of the updates. turn on automatic updates...i was opposed to this, but now i do it.

your connections with 4 devices should be the following:

Primary HD as master on primary IDE channel
Secondary HD as slave on primary IDE channel

CD burner as master on secondary IDE channel
DVD as slave on secondary IDE channel

or vice versa for the opticals (CD's)...doesn't matter which is master or slave.

but basically you want your HD's on one channel and opticals on another channel, otherwise it'll slow your system down.

if your MOBO is only a few months old, it should support SATA drives. no performance gain, but you don't have to deal with the master/slave crap and the cabling is way better.
