So I've been working on my AFC-ness these last few weeks. I'm in a selective-house now (like a coed frat/sorority without the bull**** (pledging/hazing)). So we're having a pretty substantial party this friday involving some of the 20-25 rooms in our section of on-campus housing.

So I suppose this is yet another step beyond AFC-ness towards DJ-dom (being a party host)? Any advice from fellow DJers (in college or not) on party advice, setting, and perhaps, attitude?

Right now, it seems I'm converting my 250ft single into a giant speaker-box dance-room with 2 subs and 4 speakers. I have two sound-activated strobes on the way with a double-disco ball. Plus lots of beer and liquor. Anything missing?

Cheers,
p

General notes if you're the host:

-- tight spaces, couches, various rooms, and so on, will all increase the general makeout potential

If everyone is standing around in a big room, no one's going to be getting that intimate. It won't be as easy.

-- my PERSONAL prefence is to have good music that doesn't dominate like in a club. You should be able to talk over the music.

Now, if talking isn't your strength (maybe you're better at non-verbal things or you're just particularly good looking or impressive), then maybe you do want loud music.

-- not sure how many people you're expecting, but I'm a total nerd at parties, and I find people love things out of the ordinary. You could play truth or dare, sure, but you could also find more interesting games.

Make sure they involve drinking, kino, or kissing, obviously =) Think of something creative and fun.

For just general social proofing that everyone can see, do lots of back-slapping and high-fiving.

My personal favorite is to purposefully MISS a high five with a woman. Like:

"Hey, high five!"

<I miss>

"Oh, sorry, try again."

<I miss again>

"Oh, okay, no, really, I'm going to do it this time."

<Miss again>

"Damn. Sorry. Okay, seriously. Really. No, REALLY..."

People will notice this and it'll buy you status if you get her laughing.

Work the room. Talk to everyone, even fat chicks and AFCs. Linger with people who are interesting, but always move on.

shock and awe?

well, i have a single large room (250ft dorm room) that's a part of a larger overall housing environment. Since I have such a large space to fill and the inability to add such things as large furniture pieces (unless I take something from the commons room...), I'm thinking about creating a secluded dance room.

Closing may be an issue since I lack a couch (it can be difficult to go straight to the bed), however, my main goal is to create enough social proof through my room/house-brothers & sisters/my personal grandeur so that I will reach an almost demi-god status by midnight.

Now that I've thought about the situation, almost every room around me is unlocked so there are numerous make-out niches with my dance-room being the final-close arena.

Perhaps I can just offer ladies "a private dance" in my mini-club?

Is is really all about the shock and awe?,

Great job dude i host party's (none for the next year though) but it's the greatest....gives you alot to talk about..usually your never in the same spot for more than 30 seconds because your making sure everything is going right talking to people keeping the beer kegs coming etc....

just never bring a girl if your hosting becaue you'll never have time for her...but it's definatley good to meet them...

Most reputable national/international fraternities don't haze anymore. It just isn't done. The risks are too great and it builds bad brotherhood.

If you (or anyone else) want to join a house, don't let fear of hazing deter you. Just join a chapter that is known to not engage in that type of childish garbage.

dang, werd

hm, damn our human desire to sit down.... "well, there's a bed right here where you can sit..."

alright, so i'll jack a couple of chairs and whatnot...

my main goal I suppose is to have the best room at the party. it's going to be kind of tough since I'm the knew guy in house and I'm surrounded by mostly seniors and established juniors, but w/e.

it's kind of funny, but I'm actually restricted from drinking at this party (don't ask...) so I suppose I'll gain some practice without that crutch. however, i'll probably still have a blunt with me...
