Dude, my strong advice to you is to not be a commuter freshman and to live in the dorms. You will meet a ton of people in the dorms within just your first few days, since that is when everyone is the friendliest because they're all in the same position as you. You can always move out into an apartment later.
Rush the fraternities for the parties, but don't pledge unless you're sure about what you're getting yourself in to. Rush is different at some schools; at mine it's awesome but at some schools it's not even worth your time.
After you get your feet on the ground a bit, try to get involved in something that interests you. It will help you to make some meaningful friendships and also help you out in your eventual career.
