Chocolate milk PWO?

I've heard that chocolate milk is a good post-workout drink. Lately I've been drinking a pint of lowfat chocolate milk and a scoop of whey in skim milk after I lift weights. It's partly because I heard it's a good PWO drink and partly because I love chocolate milk and I almost never have cheat meals so it's basically my one vice :)

Plus it's like a little reward to myself after finishing a hard workout. I have a very strong stomach so I can gulp it down like water with no problem even after squatting and deadlifting.

Is this a good idea and if so what is a good amount to be drinking?

your PWO shake should not contain any fat it should contain a fast absorbed protein like isolate whey and dextrose/glucose if you cant find glucose or dextrose eat some glucose candy like mentos.

as above, plus milk is a casein protein. (as well as the other health/digestive reasons not to drink milk especially pwo)

the carbs in milk are lousy after a workout.

go for whey plus carbs (I don't like dextrose but you can if you want)

Milk also has that natural whey in it as well.

@ Original Poster,

Dude go ahead and pound down FAT FREE milk post workout all you want. I've been downing down at least 2 cups of fat free milk after every workout for the past two years w/o an issue.

yeah, but there's more casein in it than whey so overall it will be a slower digested protein. it will get the job done but nowhere near as efficiently as other choices.

again you base things off personal experience and your personal body/metabolism.. if I had fat free milk post workout or any time of day, I would have severe stomach issues.

the other day you were hating on me because my high egg intake 'could' lead to cholesterol issues.. well your milk consumption in a lactose intolerant individual 'could' lead to stomach problems, among other things.

practice what you preach.

go into a bodybuilding forum and post that you drink fat free milk after workout and you will get bashed and flamed, post workout protein should be a fast absorbed protein , caseine protein is good before bed only.

it's good anytime of day except pre/post workout.. I use a whey/casein (or ideally a whey/casein/egg) blend between meals, helps keep blood amino levels stable and nitrogen balance positive.

Wow......

If your lactose intolerant thats on YOU not to drink milk,not me. Use your best judgement.

A high cholesterol is something that could affect anyone and it can creep up on people w/o them knowing it.

That's just it.. it isn't. High cholesterol due to over-eating cholesterol is a genetic trait, just like lactose intolerance. For most people dietary cholesterol has no impact on blood cholesterol at all.

Well I also have some whey in skim milk, I'm not ONLY drinking the chocolate milk. Also like I said, I have a very strong stomach and milk doesn't bother me AT ALL, I can pound down a gallon a day without any problems (don't do that anymore though), I can literally drink it like water. I tried not drinking any milk for a month and didn't notice any differences at all. So that isn't really an issue.

I'm not going into a "Even if you appear to have no symptoms doesn't mean you're not compromising your health in more subtle ways" conversation.. the fact is that in answer to your original question, choc milk is not optimal post-workout.

I used to take dextrose postworkout.

Now I've just been having 10g BCAA, 1 scoop whey and either raisins, an apple, or a banana. I've seen no difference in performance.

The real problem i have with milk is that it's just too damn expensive for what it gives you. And some raw eggs mixed in a protein shake gives it the yummy thickness like milk+whey instead of water+whey. For a postworkout shake it makes no difference because I drink it in about 4 seconds anyway.

I take 1 scoop caseine/0.5 egg white/0.5 whey before bed. Caseine is good any time except postworkout. Why would it be good ONLY before bed?

Still haven't had a heart attack, stroke, or salmonella from raw egg yolks. Maybe they caused my toothache though?
