Has anyone here ever changed their name from what their parents had given them? I'm thinking about changing my last name for personal reasons, but I'm just wondering what kind of reactions you get from people when you do this.

I changed mine (first, middle, and last).

Like you, I had personal reasons. People don't or won't change their opinions of you, the only thing is, they will see some difference as in, "hm, he's changing something". From there if you want to change the way people think of you, you better start changing the way you act.

Generally your parents, depending on how open-minded they are, won't be too happy or too angry, mine didn't really care, I know a friend whom I used to see and went to a private school, he changed his as well. For us two, nothing really changed, just the "comfort" of our names if you get the drift.

Some ideas..

Oh and if you're the kind of who is afraid of the court or judges and such, just say "because I dont' like my current name" when speaking to a judge and they ask you why you want to change it. He or she won't care. They'll just go "ok" and stamp the paper and you're out (at least until you decide to threat the whole building with bombs  ).

What do you change it too???

That would be my question. How could you choose a new identity.

What do you mean? People have a hard time changing their mindset let alone truly change their identity.

If you're talking about the legal aspect, the name or even birthdate (have heard of this), it can be done through the court.

What would he change it to? That's up to him entirely. If he wanted to change it to Desdinova Lance Bass that would be his idea.

Mine went the other way. All my life, I was told that I didn't have a birth certificate b/c I wasn't born in a hospital. I made my way through life with a baptismal certificate and my school vaccination records. When I applied for a passport, they needed a birth certificate. I told them I didn't have one, and a little digging discovered -- I $#!+ you not, here -- that my dad wasn't my dad, my mother had been married to someone else, and that I'd had a totally different name at birth. (Some paper-digger found a birth certificate in the public records from my hometown with my mother's name, my birthdate, and someone I'd never heard of listed for my father.) She'd been married and had never told us. I was 29 by this time, and I had to change my name to the name on the birth certificate. My credit cards, driver's license, business licenses, everything.

It oughta make my high school reunion interesting, huh?

I went through something similar to that. It's like I've had an identity crisis all of my life anyway, so changing my name wouldn't be that big of a deal. I can already relate to getting used to the new name.

That's actually pretty cool :)

I'm not doing it to change the way people think of me. I already know that many people don't like change and refuse to accept it. In fact, I'd choose not to tell a few people about the change.

Des, let me ask you this...

Would rock icon and legendary pimp Gene Simmons still be Gene Simmons if he had stuck with his birth moniker Chaim Klein Witz?

If you don't like the way your names resonates then go ahead and change it, the only people who care would be the ones ("crabs" as they're being called around here now) holding you back.

Someone knows I admire Gene Simmons :)

Tomatoes, there are quite a few reasons for me wanting to change my name (and none of it has to do with running from the law :) ). One of the ways that I'm looking at the whole thing: My parents are no longer the ones who raised me. I've ditched most of the things that they taught me by lesson and example. If I'm the one who developed my own morals, viewpoints, and made the major impacts to my own life, I should choose my own name. My birth name is quite flawed (much like my upbringing), and I almost feel the need to fix it.

Although this is not the only reason, it makes up a fair chunk of it.

I like my first name...it's not exactly very strong sounding, but it's pretty uncommon, and it's a fairly nice sounding name.

My last name, on the other hand, f*cking sucks. Not only is it a weak/lame-sounding one syllable name, but it's really easy to make fun of (self-pleasure related) just by adding a word in front of it, and to make matters worse, that word sounds way too much like a word you'd commonly hear in front of a name anyways (especially as an adult), so sometimes people will mistakingly hear the "funny" version and chuckle. So I have that to look forward to.

Just an all-around crappy last name that caused my grief as a kid, and will probably cause me grief till I die. I'd totally love to change it, but I don't want to deal with the stigma attached to changing your name just for personal reasons. And it's not like people who know me wouldn't have an idea of why I did (although it's not like I know many people anyways). Plus I imagine it would be seen within the family as pretty disrespectful to drop my family name. bleh. I'm surprised my mom even agreed to take my dad's name. I wouldn't have.

I've been thinking of changing my name.

It was bad enough having the last name of Skelter, but when my parents decided to name me Helter, what the hell were they thinking?

What kind of a name is that?

Everybody in school made fun of me. They use to cut themselves and write my name in blood on the bathroom walls.:(

I don't think I would change my name and keep living in the same town that I live in. It would be embarrasing and lead to a lot of awkward moments. When I move on my own I plan to leave my town and the state so that would be the perfect time to change my name. Nobody in the new place I move to would know that I changed names.

For someone like you, suicide is a better path. Changing your name just won't do.
