when i started raiders(an extracurricular in rotc) this was three years ago and they said not to drink carbonation. so i didnt. it didnt hurt me at all, i went from five cokes a day to zero. but after a week it didnt bother me. well i havent had any carbonation in three years and i was just wondering why it is bad for you.

i would guess CARBONation is bad for you because CARBONation uses CARBON to CARBONIZE. like dry ice.. and carbon is bad for you.. hence we breathe it out, and breathe in Oxygen, and breathe out carbon...

but im totally guessing :)

i think your right. i heard that it puts co2 in your blood instead of oxygen. but ive also heard thats bullsh it

not BS, carbonation rushes the caffeine to your brain faster by osmosis. this is also why you get drunk faster on champagne.

Yikes!

I don't know about carbonated sodas putting CO2 in your blood or rushing caffeine to your brain. I would encourage you to limit your intake of carbonated beverages that contain either caffeine or carbohydrates. These "pop" beverages are high in sugar (fructose and sucrose) and most people I know could stand to avoid excessive carb consumption. Also, caffeine is a somewhat addictive stimulant that can interfere with psychological and physiological functioning.

Carbon is not bad for you. Off hand, anyone know the % carbon found in a human body or in any of the animal and plant foods we eat? :)

I dunno about carbonation being bad for you, but 5 cokes a day? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that you're in MUCH MUCH better shape now than back then. Not only will that much soda put too much sugar into your blood, but it over-acidizes it too. For optimal energy and health, it's best for your blood to remain neutral or slightly alkaline. A can of soda comes in at 2 to 2.3 on the pH scale, not something you want in your blood.

Carbon is bad for us... ha!

We're all carbon-based lifeforms. But then again, we are mostly water so I'll shut up.

You can't compare carbon and water. One is an element and the other is a compound. It's like comparing apple pie and oranges.

Element-speaking, we're made up of mostly Oxygen, weight-wise. (H2O=2H+O, H weighs 1 and O weights about 16)

But being carbon-based doesn't make carbon good for us. Try breathing 100% carbon, if you like.

I don't think the carbonation does anything by itself, most of the CO2 is removed by belching, or moves all the way through your digestive system and ends up as a fart. I think you shouldn't drink carbonateds not because of Carbon, but because of the high sugar and caffein content.

Carbonation can lead to dehydration. It makes you feel bloated or full, which prevents adequate consumption of fluids. From everything I've read, it doesn't have any direct negative effects on health. I did find this (I bolded the parts I thought were most important):

Carbonation comes from dissolving carbon dioxide in water, a process also used for sparkling waters as well as soft drinks. In addition to the pleasing sensory effect, carbonation is beneficial - it keeps soft drinks safe from bacteria and microbes.

We know the results of carbonation when a beverage is opened or poured, but what about inside the body?

Easy Absorption
The carbon dioxide (CO2) in a carbonated beverage is readily and rapidly absorbed through the wall of the gastrointestinal system. But not all of the CO2 originally in the drink actually gets to the stomach. Some is lost in the fizz of opening the can or bottle, and some may combine with swallowed air to cause a belch.

The truth is, most CO2 in the beverage typically doesn't reach the digestive tract. The amount that does arrive there is quickly absorbed. In the process, it also enhances the absorption of the liquid that contains it, which causes the gastrointestinal tract to empty at a faster than usual rate. This helps to account for the long-time belief, recorded as early as 1914, that carbonation can promote digestion and ease nausea.

Carried to the lungs
The absorbed CO2 goes into the bloodstream, where most of it is carried to the lungs for exhalation. The CO2 is transported in one of three ways. Approximately 10 percent dissolves in the blood. About 20 percent becomes bound to hemoglobin. The rest, roughly 70 percent, is carried by red blood cells in the form of bicarbonate, which occurs when CO2 combines with water contained in the red blood cells.

Normal organic processes
Most of the CO2 in our blood is produced not by carbonated beverages, but by the body's conversion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats into energy. In other words, having CO2 moving through the blood is a routine metabolic action.

When we exercise, we can feel the effects of CO2 in our bloodstream. As your workout builds in intensity, the level of CO2 in your blood rises because you are generating more energy. Your respiratory system responds by eliminating more CO2 and taking in more oxygen – which you experience as breathing harder.

Whether exercising or at rest, a healthy body's natural chemical reactions efficiently remove carbon dioxide from the blood. This maintains a normal acid/base balance. Carbonation does not raise the acid level of the blood and cannot dissolve bone.

Nor does carbonation have any impact on the lumpy-appearing fat sometimes called "cellulite," which is body fat pulled tight by the connective tissue that attaches skin to underlying muscle. Myths to the contrary are just that – myths.

Basically, I don't think it's the carbonation that hurts you, but I don't think it helps you either.

Carbon and Carbon Dioxide are so different It hurts me to hear you say that. Water is H2O, Hydrogen and Oxygen are flammable. Water seems like it should be the most flammable substance there is, but chemical compounds cannot be predicted by their elements.

i haven't heard that much about the carbon, but i've done the same thing with regards to no soda.

from what i've heard it's all of the sugar in it. over 1/2 of that dumb can is pure sugar. sugar sits at the bottom of your stomach making you run slower, lose your breath faster, make your BP fly through the roof, and make you sweat like a MF.

that's my input, so stay away from that soda fellas!
