Would this work to my advantage? I had the opportunity to meet the good friend of the girl I am interested in. I know how girls love to talk. Maybe she could put in a good word for me?
Would it be smart to befriend her?

That kind of behavior just makes you look weak. Don't do it. If you like her, tell her. If one of her friends asks you if you like her, say that it's between you and her.

Its always nice to become friends with her friends but its probably not a good idea to be pouring out your feelings for the girl to her friend.

I just try to get on her friends nice side because quite frankly it makes things much easier then if her friends were to hate me. Then your chances are slim and none.

Yeah it's ok to befriend her friends. Hell you could find you like her friends better than her, and it never hurts to have a plan B.

Just don't use them to express interest - that should be done one on one.

Agreed...... VERY agreed.

As the others say, make sure you end up on the nice side with her friends, but DO NOT under ANY circumstances, ask for advice/help from these persons.

as the ninja said, you'll only appear scared/weak, which is a big no no.
