I'm getting increasingly frustrated when I go shopping because buying clothes is tough. I have a 42 inch chest and my shoulders are wide too, which in shops like Topman puts me on the large-x large border which is ridiculous because my waist is 32 inches and I have a good 6 pac. So any large clothes just sort of drop down from my chest and hangs, not really showing any sort of shape which is annoying because then I look like your average fatty on the street. I don't really fit into mediums because it rides up too high because of the width around my shoulder and chest areas, the clothes just feel tight and restrictive. Plus even if they are a little more stretchy after a few washes they naturally shrink a little and become almost unwearable. I always have to try on before buying because so many things just don't look as good as they can do which means I spend fücking ages shopping when I want to be in and out.

Is it worth finding a place to alter clothes or are there any brands out there that cater to the guys with V tapers?

Look for the terms slim or fitted in the shirt descriptions. Most top brands have these styles.

Van Huesen has what's called a Studio collection which is more fitted than regulars. Other companies do also.

Try it when you have a 50" chest, 53" shoulders and a 34" waist...

If I buy a shirt that actually fits properly, the sleeves come over my hands. If I buy a shirt where the sleeves fit properly, I can't button the top button to wear a tie and I end up ripping shirts routinely when I make a sudden reaching movement.

Add to this that I have to buy pants a size or two too big because my legs and butt are so thick. If I buy pants my size within a day or two the seams on the outside of my quads will be ripped and the seam in my groin and the top of my butt will be ripped. Even with the pants a size or two too big my wife has to sew the seams up at least once every few months...

It's honestly pretty annoying...plus I can't show off my great butt in pants because there is too much room back there!

But I look amazing in thermal long john shirts a size too small and some nice workout pants, lol...
