Can you guys name a few good books that specify more on free weight exercises? Also any general books that explain what an weight lifter needs to eat, sleep, and drink.Along with what kind of protein. Is creatine recommended? I heard protein or creatine is bad for your heart? what are side effects using this stuff?
Im getting serious about weight lifting. I wanna have defined muscles and strong at same time. Im 162 and 5'9. Is it realistic to go for a 180? or maybe a 175 solid?
any help appreciated

ps. sorry, lots of questions........

Getting stronger by Bill Pearl and Brother Iron, Sister Steel by Dave Draper. Both the Ironman and Musclemag Bodybuilding Encyclopedias are well worth a look too.

The only reason I bought the Dave Draper book is because he autographed it when I bought it, and I have repsect for the man, but other then that the book is worthless to me. Now to get to the good books, one book I do not reccomend you get is Arnolds Encycolpedia of Bodybuilding, huge waste of money...the info in there IMO sucks compared to the quality of books out today, and guys don't flame me on this for dissin' that book I own it myself.

"Power to the People", "The Russian Kettlebell Challenge", "From Russia with Tough Love" (geared toward women but for men it's great, better even than RKC), and "More Russian Kettlebell Challenges" by Pavel Tsatsouline, and "H2H" by Jeff Martone, and "Cruel and Unusual Kettlebell Exercises" by Steve Maxwell. All are sold on www.dragondoor.com. Also, www.bodybuilding.com is a great online encyclopedia of weightlifting, and best of all, it's free!

On creatine, I just finished my first cycle a week or two ago. No adverse side effects, and it helped quite a bit with muscle gain. It would have adverse effects if overdone, but I did 5g/day, no loading phase BS. On protein, why would that have adverse effects if it's a common nutrient? I mean unless you're very obviously overdoing it and having 700G/day or something...

Your goal is definitely realistic. For great weight gain and strength gain routines, "PTTP" outlines a routine known as the Bear routine. I don't remember exactly what it is though myself. HIT, which is written about on bodybuilding.com, is also great for that kind of thing. I haven't tried HIT yet, but I'm going to start my first rounds of HIT next week. Remember to eat a lot.
