It occurred to me that my last 3 dates followed a formula and it is a winner for a first date.
1) Have her meet you at the bar of a trendy restaurant or pub. Have one drink there. You pay for the drink.
2) Plan a restaurant within walking distance. The price doesn't matter but it must be a place you love. This can be for just coffee if one of you is LGBT, but ideally an appetizer of entrée that you share. You pay for dinner. Let her take a to go box if she wants. Put it in your car but have one more stop planned.
3) After dinner (with dessert as her option), walk to a third place for a night cap. If she offers to pay, let her, but otherwise you cover it.
4) At this point you have had 3+ drinks. End the date early. This is about 2-3 hours after you met. Drive her to her parking lot and walk her to her car. At least go for a cheek kiss. If she kisses you on the lips, do it, but don't go for tongue. Ideally you will end the kiss early too. The first kiss should be as gentle as possible, with both of you holding your ground. Don't bear hug her, but a girl can tell you a lot with her hug so let her hug you.
5) If she happens to want sex, don't deny her, but never expect it on the first date.
6) Wait to see if she writes to you again. She ideally will thank you. Leave her wondering if she will ever see you again.
7) Know that the measure of whether it was a good date is whether you get another date.
