Hi there, I have just joined a gym and was wondering what the best thing to do would be to boost my energy levels and beat depression. I rekon some kind of cardio but what is the best? I use the cross training machine, which I feel is good, but it has lots of settings 'weight loss' 'cardio' 'x-training' etc, whats best to energise oneself?

Also, anybody got any meditative exercises or recommend anything that will energise the soul and make a person feel better about being in this world?

I am making an effort to eat as healthy as I can too.

Strength training and cardiovascular training are a must for physical well being. Check out the "Where to Start" thread in the vault for some beginners strength training advice.

May I ask, what do you think constitutes a healthy diet? Let's see an average daily food intake for you.

Agreed that diet is important.

If you can find a competitive sport that is fun, then that will help give a focus and a point to your workouts, and a very tangible reason to put one foot in front of the other each day. Do whatever is fun for you. Almost anyone can play a sport like sand volleyball, softball, basketball, or indoor soccer. There are independent pay-to-play team sports and church leagues everywhere.

If you have depression and don't want to try medication, I highly suggest omega-3 fish oil. A lot of people use it as a natural anti-depressent, and it's pretty good for you.

Well, my diet as of recently has been something along the lines of this:

Breakfast: Fruit n nut cornflakes with yoghurt

snacks - ratatouille and jacket potato

Meals - soya (or quorn) with onions, garlic, carrots, sweetcorn. With pasta. I usually spice my meals up a lot, but watch the salt!

I eat a lot of the above recently.

I am also trying to eat fruits and veg more often.

I eat sandwhiches of chicken and sweetcorn, things like that.

I try to include lots of grains and brown rice into my diet and am cutting down on meat.

I also try to keep to the Hay Diet where possible (not combining protein and carbs) so that the food is digested quickly for maximum health benefit.

I take the fish oil, and lots of other supplements like rhodiola rosa, which is a natural herbal thing for boosting mood. I take multivits and vit c, st.johns wort, ginseng, gingko biloba, and flaxseed oil.

I also take a spoonful of coconut oil per day for its supposed health benefits.

If you have depression and don't want to try medication
Meds are NEVER the way to go EVER !!

I had a client who was on 2 or 3 different psychotropic meds. I told her those meds were all BS, and designed to get people legal addicted and spend money for the rest of there lives on them. I told her there was nothing wrong with her and I would help her get off of them.

I took care of her diet, and trained her for 3 months...she has to slowly ween off the meds but she and her family are shocked that she is able to NOT take her meds and feel and act completely normal.

My point is, all of those medical illnesses and psychological disorders are caused from poor nutrition and physical activity. You already got all the advice you need from everyone in this thread so DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT EXPERIMENTING OR MESSING WITH MEDS !!

This is completely untrue. While some disorders might be caused by not enough physical activity or poor diet, those 2 things most likely won't cause a chemical imbalance in your brain.

What illnesses and medications did she have/take?

PROVE to me WHAT A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE IS ??

ASK ANY PSYCHIATRIST WHAT DEFINITIVE TEST IS USED TO DETERMINE IF SOMEONE HAS A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE !!!!

chemical imbalance is a hypothesis..or THE BEST GUESS at what might be wrong with someone

"Chemical Imbalance is a term created to fool people into spending money on addictive medication. They hear psychiatrists use those words and think they have meaning behind it. It is nothing but a scam.

watch this and then download the whole video

The definition is in the name. An imbalance of a chemical in your brain (seretonin for example).. an abnormal level of a chemical in your brain which causes an adverse reaction leading to a psychological disorder.

While there isn't a "definitive test" that points out either "chemical imbalance" or "no chemical imbalance", clearly if you're deficient in an important chemical or neurotransmitter, your brain won't function properly.. leading to the disorder.

Now I'm not saying that proper nutrition and physical activity won't help, but you may have infact FIXED the chemical imbalance.

My best example is myself.. I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, and I get a lot of exercise and eat healthy. Now if there wasn't some kind of imbalance of chemicals or neurotransmitters in my body, wouldn't my sleep quality be normal? How do you explain that?

keep taking your supps like fish oil and multivitamins. Running outside always flooded my body with endorphins but you are in a gym, so treadmill it. Another good endorphin-inducing exercise is the punching bag. Don't overdo yourself right now and lead yourself into exhaustion, then it won't feel good. With time, you'll be able to build up your physical abilities and tolerance for more challenging workouts.

You won't really boost you energy levels with a specific workout, just do about an hour of cardio daily and work on your DIET. You need foods that will raise you energy levels high. So let's first start with foods you should NOT eat: Turkey, Chocolate, Milk, Sugared foods (which cause energy levels to deplete after a "sugar" high), etc.

When it is important for you to be alert, eat foods that do not cause a high rise in blood sugar, such as vegetable salads, nuts, seeds, meat, fish and chicken. FRUITS AND VEGETABLES IS KEY!

Drum&Bass, be careful telling people their meds are useless, many pro athletes have suffered severe depression and committed suicide despite their diet and fitness. Some people are just born with brain problems.

Your wrong in telling people you won't boost energy levels by weight training. In fact this is probably the biggest factor.

Why the hell are you telling people to stop eating turkey?

Red meat is just as important as other meats.

Changing to a fat based diet will raise energy levels dramatically.

Yeah thats a good point. Turkey is a lean meat that is an excellent source of protein (much better than chicken.) If you want energy.. make sure you eat lots of fruits and vegetables.. along with getting all your daily vitamin and mineral needs. I would recommend buying some higher end vitamin and mineral supplements (the cheap ones are worthless). Be prepared to spend atleast $30 a month.. probably more.

Weight training will also increase your energy levels dramatically not only by boosting your testosterone levels, but you will also feel better about yourself and life in general which will give you a boost.

schizophrenia is total BS if you look up the definition !! nothing to do with this magical mysterious "chemical imbalance". It is assumed* to be caused by social pressures, people are NOT BORN with schizophrenia fake doctors tell people they have some kind of sadness illness. If you or anyone were having a tough time in life it would be hard to function like a normal person but psychiatrists will fool you into thinking you have an illness.

Usually people who are suicidal are detained and kept away from the general public. Meds keep them in a temporary vegetative state. Meds don't prevent people from killing themselves, programs and having long drawn out discussions and then a hopeful assessment of there behavior is all that can be done.

If people have made up there mind to take there lives, NO AMOUNT OF PSYCHOTROPIC MEDICATION WILL PREVENT THAT FROM HAPPENING.

I'll say it again PSYCHOTROPIC MEDS ARE NOT THE WAY TO GO IF YOUR NOT FEELING RIGHT !!!
There may truly be something wrong but prescribed medications from corporations is not the direction to follow when finding help.

Do not be too easy. If you are too easy to get, she will not want you. If you are too easy to keep, she will lose interest in you. If you are too easy to control, she will not respect you.
