In times of needing a snack, I want to go for something healthy. I like raw vegetables like cucumber, paprika's, brocolli,... but was wondering what's the best.

I'm physically active, I lift weights, jog and do simple pushups on spare time and was wondering what's the best in combination with this?

Thanks

Too many raw vegtables will make you want to gag. They aren't digested so easily and it takes time for the benefits to come out. In reality, post-workout dieting needs to be quick acting foods. There's no reason not to eat them after a workout, but cooking them lightly AND ingesting the broth will be better than raw. Steaming is best, it helps to leech out the vitamins and kill bacteria.

as a snack celery is great as it is calorie negative meaning that it takes more calories to digest it than you ingest from eating it. but it all depends on if you have a specific diet in place. do you need the complex carbs from something like yams or sweet potato or do you need something like a fibrous green ?

I feel your pain. I'm a calorie counter myself; only way to be if you ask me. Calorie counting not only makes you lose weight, it helps to build self-control.

In my experience, you can't beat veggie steamables. I'm talking about veggies that come packaged to microwave and eat out of the bag. I always buy Birdseye, but there are different and cheaper brands. I usually get the green beans or broccoli and cauliflower. Spray them down with vegetable oil, add a little salt and pepper and it's on. Delicious, filling and hardly any calories.

Shout out to Espi.

The benefits of vegetables are largely in the antioxidants. The way that they react with human cells is only beginning to be understood, but it is thought that they absorb the free radical particles that destroy cells. Science makes new discoveries all the time about the details of the process.

One very simple rule is that bright colors are healthy. Orange is beta carotene. Blue/purple is anthocyanin. Red tomatoes contain lycopene. Cruciferous vegetables like Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, and Kohlrabi also contain healthy antioxidants and phytochemicals. Green tea deserves a mention, and many mushrooms as well.

The "organic" label is meaningless now that the government took it over. Under NAFTA, the US is not allowed to question the authenticity of any labeling of imported produce. Mexican growers can coat their product with pesticides that are illegal to buy in the US. If it is labeled as organic, they make twice the profit, and there's no risk of getting caught. But small farmers in the US get inspected so rigorously that it's often not worth it to obtain the necessary government approval for the "organic" label.

What you really want is fresh food, and the closer you are to the production of it, the healthier it is. Your local farmer's market will have the freshest food.
