Beard growth/density problem?

Hi guys, i've been reading the boards a lot since i joined (which was yesterday, but still :p).

Anyways, i've decided to ask a question regarding my beard.
I'm a 21 (and a half) and my beard is not that thick. In fact, it's not thick at all. And the worst part is - my whole face isn't even covered with facial hair. There are some stamps on my face where the beard doesn't grow (or where there are, i call them colorless, hairs)

Anyway, my question is - why is that. I'm white and from Europe, if that means something :p

I know the whole story, genetics and stuff, but i can name maybe one person in my entire family (both my mother's and my father's cousins) that have weak facial hair.

My father has thick strong beard, as well as both of my grandfathers.
Regarding me - i have hair "all over the place" - legs, chest, belly, armpit hair, hands, my hair is pretty good. Hair everywhere, except on my face.

I have notices some small improvements, but they've seem to stop from last year and a half.

So, maybe can it be related to lack of testosterone (i read that somewhere) or maybe lack of physical activities?
Is there anyway that i can stimulate beard growth, to make it more dense.

Not really sure there's all that much you can do about it except wait. Some guys I know couldn't grow anything all through high school and even a bit into college, then voila, one day I see them rocking a mountain man beard. Other guys have always been able to grow a nice beard and then other guys are in their 50s and still can't grow sh1t. It's genetics. Don't listen to any of those snake oil salesmen trying to sell you bogus products. Then again, maybe there is something out there that really is legit.

shaving is supposed to stimulate thick growth.

A friend read that and started shaving daily, it was a discipline to him, and now he has a big thick bushy beard.

Dunno if it was a genetic thing really, but it seemed to work. Shave more and the hair grows thicker.

living in the middle of effing nowhere
i had the same problem OP. its like a dog which has constant patchy shedding right? like a half-assed front lawn .

anyway do this :
get a blade, and just graze it on your skin. you might think that "hey there is no effing hair there" but actually there are microscopic hairs in those patchy areas, they just lack "motivation". just make sure to use those shaving cream thingies.

so do this a couple of weeks and you'll start to see hair growth.

This sounds interesting. But, can you explain what's the difference between this and regular shaving with a razor?
I'm guessing it somehow strengthens those microscopic hairs, but doesn't a razor do the same?

@Purefilth - I recall redaing somewhere that that's an urban myth. Supposedly, often shaving just makes the existing hairs "thicker", leaving the impression that the whole beard became thicker.

@TheStig - regarding the genetics - as i said, i don't know any male member of my family that isn't able to grow a decent beard. Strangely enough, most of them were able to do so even at my age, so i'm really confused there.

You could just have a recessive gene that doesn't allow thick facial hair. And I also have heard the shaving thing is an urban legend. It doesn't really even make the existing hairs thicker, it just gives them a flat top at the end, from being cut by the razor, appearing thicker, instead of an unshaven hair which comes to a point.

You explained better the shaving thing, but we agree that most likely it's a legend.

I'm really frustrated by how i'm able to grow hair more than i want/or need on every other part of my body (literaly), except on my face. It really makes me frustrated at times.

I've never seen dudes with good hair all over the place, except on the face, except in my case :D

So, my only solution is to wait and hope it will "thicken up" at some point :D
