In terms of muscle development, what is the different in the doing the same excercise with barbells vs dumbells?

They work diffrent "parts" of the mustle. In general tho barbells with make more mass then dumbells.

Ok, question which is probably dumb: What is a dumbbell and barbell? All I know is the free weights that you curl with and the bar you use to bench.

In my opinion dumbbells are the better choice most of the time for two reasons...

1) Greater Range of Motion

2) They work more stabalizer muscles

They can also be useful for when you don't have a spotter.

Barbells are superior for squats and deadlifts. If you are a powerlifter, then you'll want to bench with a barbell.

I'm not saying barbells are bad though by any means. They are much better than machines and are good to use to change up your routine a little bit.
