I'm 16 and have noticed areas of hair are thinner than others and its scaring the fvck out of me! Maybe its through using hair styling products i dunno... but i read somewhere that bodybuilding produces excess testosterone... more testosterone may sound good but could this lead to early mpb? Anyone noticed that there hairs receeding once they started BBing? How come powerlifters are mostly bald, how come most lifters are?

are you talking about lifters in general or the ones you see on TV? cause if its the ones you see on tv most of those who compete in the national level use steriods and HGH's

I think that it's mostly due to other reasons: when you lift, long hair is really annoying, so most bodybuilders rather keep it short or shaved. Also, when you are bald, more attention is drawn to your body rather than your head, and this obviously is something a bodybuilder wants.

Testosterone doesn't directly lead to male pattern baldness. It's the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes it. It is purely down to genetics, but an increase in testosterone (through bodybuilding for example) can speed up the process.

There are DHT blockers out there, but are usually overpriced. Apparently the herb Saw Palmetto is supposed to be a good natural DHT blocker. These won't prevent baldness if it's in your genes, but they should (theoretically) slow the process.

I take Saw Palmetto anyway because it's good for prostate health and is cheap enough, so nothing to lose by it.

my multivitamin has that but does it only block testorone to the prostate or does it stop the process of testostorne all to together?

Look at your grandfather from your mom side of the family. If he is bald then you are most likely to be one as well. Its genetics mostley.
Both my grandfathers never lost their hair, but my father started visibly at 30 and at 47 is now almost completely bald.

Am I *genetically* going to resemble a bowling ball?

Nah you should be fine. If you ask him I bet his grandfather from his mom side was bald too.

I think it just stops the conversion of the testosterone to DHT, so that should mean more testosterone in your system as its not converting. Not sure though.... just my theory, anybody know if this is true?

Yep, from what I can gather from the reading I've done, this is true! Most of the hair growth products on the market are based around DHT blockers and scalp stimulation. Saw Palmetto is said by some to be equally effective, but because it is a natural herb, companies cannot own the rights to it or sell it for a higher price.

An interesting fact: men who have been castrated or have lost their testicles don't suffer from hair loss and bald men who lose their testicles see their hair grow back in full.

I guess it's a matter of priorities and I think most men would rather be bald than lose their balls!! :)

so low levels of DHT shouldn't affect muscle growth?

No not at all! It should actually help, because less DHT means more testosterone...in theory anyway.

In a lot of testosterone booster supplements, they include DHT blockers now.

I look like a prisoner of war when I've shaved my head so I'm praying I won't go bald. But my balls are staying put no matter what! :)

Can we put this to rest, please.. it's bordering on 'insane overthinking'.

Shadowfox, if your hair is thinning at 16 then I promise you, it's not to do with weightlifting.

Jay Cutler - this year's Mr Olympia and brimming with plenty of test (among other things) has a full head of hair. In years past so did Arnie. Ronnie shaves his head but when he first started competing he had hair. Andy Bolton and Benny Magnusson, both with 900lb+ deadlifts, both have hair. Phil Pfister has hair.

No-one on this forum under the age of 30 should have to worry about testerosterone or anything like that. You should still be sweating about getting a hard-on on in public because your hormone levels are overflowing.

(Powerlifters are usually bald because the WPO rules state you need a shaved head and a goatee to compete .. :D)

Fact: My Father has two older brothers who are not bald, at all.

Fact: My Father is a relatively short 5'9" but massive mesomorph (230-270) from my father's family, due to him climbing ropes as a young child and wrestling in Middle-School & High School. He barely lost state, and though he never talked about it, I got the word from everyone else in my family.

Fact:...

He's bald, balding since he was 23, his older brothers aren't like that, at all. They'll lose their hair from 60+, I'm guessing.

In my experience, with a small example provided above, it seems apparent that:

Increased Testosterone from resistance exercises on a bulking diet = balding for at least some percentage of the population.

I don't have fantasies that my personal family's history is the norm, but this correlates with close friends I've had, and pretty much everything I've ever seen.

I will say his diet was great for variety, but sucked on specifics related to modern health advances, because I know the types of foods my g-ma serves, or should I say the quantities. :)

it doesn't really matter if we go bald i saw in the newspaper a few days ago an article about hair multiplication techniques that are being developed and that treatment should be available by 2009/2010. I really cant see me losing everything by then so woohoo go scientists :cheer:
