I'm trying to compute how much it costs the average married man for sex.

Here are my starting numbers but I'm hoping to refine this with the cost of alimony and child support, plus her taking half of his stuff.

1) Average cost of wedding: $30,000 (2014).
2) Average cost of divorce $30,000 (they say it costs as much to divorce as marry so I'm going with this for now).
3) Average length of marriage 8 years.
4) Average couple has sex 86 times per year (using 30-39 age bracket).
5) TBD Average income discrepancy (hidden cost to man if she doesn't earn half)...
6) TBD Average loss of existing wealth (no pre nup)...
7) TBD Assuming children, average cost of child support and alimony...

So it's coming out to at least $87.20 for each time a man has sex, and that's if he doesn't have kids. But he'll say "I don't pay for sex!!!".

The greatest cost is not financial, but the possible sacrifice of sanity.

Just saw an older couple as I was walking in town. They were probably pre-retirement age. Was in a department store - I don't usually frequent, but am in the market for some new threads.

As I walked by this couple, the guy was walking a couple paces ahead of his missus, and threw his hands to his head making a pull-your-hair out kind of gesture, and gasping in despair. It may have been something, it may have been nothing, but was just so candid, the unhappiness between them was quite tangible, even to a complete stranger.

I am quite unlikely to marry, unless I really do find a best friend.

I agree with the above. Married guys are absolutely paying for it. It's just a question of how much.

Just one friendly suggestion...

I think you might want to multiply the average cost of divorce (and anything divorce-related) by the probability of getting divorced.

If we assume a 50 percent chance of getting divorced and paying $30k, then the average married guy (who may or may not end up divorced) pays $15k.

As it stands, the analysis assumes that the marriage will DEFINITELY end in divorce.

All that matters is that the cost of marriage is higher than the benefit. Which in common sense terms equals a BAD DEAL.

For something to be worthwhile, the benefits must ALWAYS be greater than the cost. If that is not the case.. then you are a sucker/idiot for entering into such a contract/deal.

Common sense. But the Disney movies have most men fooled. Even on this site.

Don't you mean average cost of a man to NOT have sex?

As I've always said, I will get married if the woman makes more money than me.

My sister is marrying this dude who makes less than half she does so he is getting a sweet deal. She always pays for everything.!

Consider this - I just adjusted for inflation the top 12 most expensive divorces of all time.

  • Neil Diamond - $150M 1975 ($663M)
  • Mel Gibson - $425M 2011 ($449M)
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger ~$300M 2011 ($317M)
  • Michael Jordon - 18y $168M 2007 ($192M)
  • Steven Spielberg - $100M 1989 ($191M)
  • Kevin Costner - $80M 1994 ($128M)
  • Tiger Woods - $110M 2010 ($120M)
  • Harrison Ford - $85M 2004 ($107M)
  • James Cameron - $50M 1999 ($71M)
  • Michael Douglas - $45M 2000 ($64M)
  • Phil Collins - $47M 2003 ($60M)
  • Paul McCartney - $48M 2008 ($53M)

Look at this list of men - the vast majority self made men, some of the greatest men of our generation, men we all aspired to be like, men who our women said we could never compare to - and look what women did to them. And these women weren't even that hot to most of us. In other words, the greater the man, the more women will steal from him.

On average, each of these men were taken for $201 Million dollars (enough to pay for sex with half a million women).

That would be a good deal. However that's also emasculating.

Nothing fancy about your wife being a "Beta provider mom".

I thought tradition was the bride's family paid for the wedding. I know that's the way it was when I got married, some 20+ years ago. Are you saying this has changed, and the groom is supposed to pick up the tab now?
