Are there any advantages of eating meat over a vegetarian diet? Say a vegetarian is meeting all of his protien requirements and taking supplements for creatine and carnitine. Wouldn't he be as well off or better than someone who eats meat for protien considering they are getting equel ammounts of protien.

Meat eaters do have an advantage. The most obvious one to me is the protein issue...let's say a vegetarian is meeting their protein requirements for building muscle (i.e. 1.5-2g/lb). If you're 150lbs, you wouldn't want to be getting *all* 300g of your protein from whey and casein shakes...ugh, fvck no. In fact some vegetarians may not even drink whey and casein because of it's derivation from animal products, much less egg protein.

So the other sources for vegetarians are soy protein, which have quite low BV (biological value) and are pretty crap proteins (bad amino acid profile). Not to mention soy's potential hormonal effects..

So, getting decent protein is more of a problem..

Also, many vegetarian diets lack fat, which is very important for hormone control and hence muscle growth. This can be put right, however, by drinking olive oil, flaxseed oil, etc..

So there are disadvantages, but that doesn't mean you can't grow muscle as a veggie.

It helps but I have to say, i once had a meat free detox and felt amazing.

I couldn't give up meat, but it makes you wonder.

Pork, i don't touch.

What if you replace all your meat with eggs? Isn't eggs the most efficient source of protien?

Yeah, eggs are awesome as you know. But I thought this was about veggies? :D If someone eats eggs but not meat, then ya sure, go for eggs.

I was better built when I was a vegetarian because I had to watch what I ate, make sure to get enough of everything...however - now I'm on a strict diet, no doubt I'm gonna get better than before

better quality protein, carnitine etc etc

I'd much rather eat a nice bloody steak or a roasted leg of lamb than eggs.

It's very, very difficult to get enough complete protein out of a true vegan diet for the average person's requirements, let alone building any significant amount of muscle.

Eggs & meat are both complete proteins with the right balance of aminos for muscle growth. Ask WBA about the extra benefits of red meat.

For growth, I would suggest looking at what the average vegan eats, then add red meat, fish, poultry and eggs. They can't eat the processed crap that most of us load up on, so it's a great starting point. But going vegan for growth... good luck. You'll probably find several 'success' stories of 'vegan bodybuilders' somewhere on the internet.

Definatly not going vegan, lol. I am just thinking about replacing all the meat in my diet for eggs since eggs are cheaper and easier to cook.

I think you'd get bored of just eggs very quickly.

I'm an advocate of ignoring the cholesterol in eggs & downplaying the negative side of saturated fat, but relying entirely on eggs would be false economy. their fat : protein ratio is basically 1:1, while even the fattiest chunks of ground beef are more like 1:2, and chicken breast 1:8.

And while they're the cheapest protein around, as simon says, going for all eggs is monotonous.

Beef & chicken aren't any harder to cook (unless you're taking all those eggs raw), and it's much easier to mix either with fibrous veggies or beans.

If chickens are naturally raised and fed and not mass raised you will get the Omega-3 heart health benefits from egg's. I just bought a cartoon of Omega-3 eggs so any negatives about eggs are wiped out with this cartoon.

there is a strong case to be made for using such eggs, but the ones I have access to tend to negate the price advantage that eggs enjoy in the first place.

Well, after looking at some nutrition labels, it seems that meat is much more dense in protien than eggs. Good enough reason for me to keep da meat.
