I'm wonder what everyone's thoughts are with this. I want advice to help make a decision.

Soon, I'm moving away to another town. I'm a college student, and I'm going to need to get an apartment. The question I have is whether or not I should try to find a complex that has a lot of college students, or not.

What I consider important is that I am able to live alone, so it'll have to be a one or two bedroom apartment. Anything larger and I might as well get a small house. Also, parking in addition to my own is important, since I'm hoping to have the ability to easily have people over. Street parking is fine for that. But, I know that I can only judge this by actually looking at the apartment, so while I welcome any comments about this I don't expect any of you to be much help.

What I do hope others can tell me, is their experiences in living in apartment complexes with a lot of students. Will this result in increased noise? Are there going to be loud parties during the week, on days other than Friday or Saturday night? If so, is it highly disturbing? How about social opportunities? Tenant discrimination?

Partying:

I'm anything but anti-party. In fact, I'm all about partying and having a good time. I know for a fact that even if I'm at home on a Friday or Saturday night, I'm not going to complain about a party down the hall. Chances are, I won't even be home. I'll be out myself or maybe even at the party. But I also show some restraint. I'm not sure if blaring music at 2AM on a Thursday morning (Wednesday night) is something I'd like. At that time of day, I will be home and I will be trying to sleep. Generally, I don't stay out past 10-10:30 on a week night, if I go out.

Currently I live with my parents, though like I said I'll be moving out soon. Once, I did live in an apartment by myself. It was a small four unit building with four one bedroom apartments. I remember that I was the only undergraduate college student, and the others seemed like a bunch of recluses, with one guy being, in fact a recluse making his living by buying and reselling on Ebay. He wasn't very social at all whenever I talked to him. I might be too, in the sense that I cannot stand the idea of sharing an apartment. But, I do enjoy social interactions and going out. I wonder if it'll be different if I lived in a larger apartment complex. One guy I met, who did share an apartment, said that when they held parties they invited everyone who lived in his complex, as well of course people they know.

However, I once heard of someone who claimed that people in their complex partied so hard in the apartment above them that the ceiling light in their living room got loose and fell off. But, that sounds ridiculous. If it's even possible, it sounds like a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of thing.

Social:

I would think that a larger number of people would mean a larger number of opportunities. True? False?

Tenant Discrimination:

I've heard about this. How bad is it if it's mostly students? Should I just try to avoid such complexes?

I was living in exactly the kind of apartment complex you describe around this time last year.

The positives are that I met a lot of new people. Went to a lot of parties and met some girls. Overall, it wasn't bad and I still keep in touch with some of those folks.

I'm living at home now, like yourself, and it's much quieter. Be prepared for loudness. I would recommend getting earplugs and those things you put over your eyes to cover them so you can sleep in a lit room. Maybe also get some sleeping pills or relaxing teas. The only negative is lack of sleep, and after a while I would get pissed (from not sleeping) and from annoying suitemates who just wanted to party 24/7. I mean, these guys would go to class during the day and stay up until 6am!

That first night when I first moved in it was hilarious. I had gotten up at around 2am to use the bathroom, and the other guys were all in the living room about to head out to play basketball. They woke me up when they got back at around 3:30AM because there was a party to go to, LOL.

To be honest, partying is fun, but I like sleep better. I can take the party 24/7 lifestyle up to a point, and some people take it a little too far. My study habits also slipped a little bit. It was surely a blast, and I think it's one of those things that you should do especially if you're new to an area. Go live in one for about a year, meet a lot of people and then get a quieter place. That way you can still know a lot of people for parties and hanging out, while being able to live a more balanced lifestyle.

Was it really that bad? Thankfully, I can sleep through nearly anything, or anything I've experienced so far. Once my mother claimed that I slept through a tornado siren. And I've slept while leaving the room light on. Yet despite it all, I manage to hear the alarm when I'm supposed to and manage to be where I need to be.

Seriously? I've never known anyone that crazy. Who plays basketball at 2AM? Did they get drunk during the week too?

How old were your roommates? They sound like 18 y/o's fresh out of high school and parents' restrictions. 2AM and I'm ready to quit (though I've gone home later than that). During the week it's more like 10-10:30PM.

At least I will be living alone, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I should at least consider it. Mostly I go to bars and clubs, though sometimes a change in pace is good. Plus they're cheaper and you can drink anything you want since essentially every party is BYOB.

During the week I usually go to bed at around 3:30 AM and during the weekends I often don't even come home and I live with my parents... but yeah it's my first year outta high school;)
