AOL Instant Messenger - Blessing or Not?

Hey guys. Im in college and everyone and their dog here communicates via AIM, AOL, Instant messengers, etc etc.

Anyways, I am split in between the two on the fact of whether it is good or not to have AIM. I know it makes me WAYY too available to girls, and I tend to waste time. But it makes it a lot easier to chat with my buddies and plan out our night and stuff, but is it worth it?

I mean I dont really know - any thoughts on this?

I dont see an issue with it, as long as you keep it in moderation. I HATE the phone...I talk to my friends on AIM 90% of the time.

Do what I did, make a seperate screen names just for the fellas.

In general I like instant messaging programs. I use MSN Messenger lots and it keeps me in touch with all of my friends. However, I agree that it can make you too available to girls. To combat this I do one of the following:

1. Block them. This way you can see if they are online but you won't be visible to them. You will be visible to others you haven't blocked so you can still talk to your friends.

2. Always be 'away' or something. This way if a chick messages you you can just ignore her. If you want to talk to anyone else just send them a message saying you are there.

Works for me. This way I have just one account.

I used iChat for mac OS X, and you can chat while your away message is on. I love it.

Use it only for people you see regularly IRL. ANybody else will have 1 or 2 decent convos with you and afterwards, you will both make up excuses not to talk to eachother.
It's hard to take someone seriously when he is represented by a block of text.
