The primitive parts of people's brains interpret them as rivals in the mating game ... genetically superior rivals. Both sexes know that their partners would leave them for their favorite celebrity in a heartbeat, and may even feel that their partner settled for them because the celebrity was unobtainable.
Also, I think hatred of one's superiors is perfectly natural. Their superiority is never used for our own benefit, and is often used to our detriment, so of course we grow to despise it. At the same time, we are instinctively driven to try and reach the top; you can't reach the top without destroying whoever is already there, and you won't destroy someone that you respect, admire, or love ... which makes hatred the only beneficial feeling you can have about them.
