I got to thinking about getting a bike, figure it may help burn off some belly fat that I need to get rid of. Hitting up a gym is a real pain because of my work hours and the actual to and from commute to work. The busses around here do have a bike rack so maybe I could omit a bus or two and bike part of the way to work.

So I was just wondering if anyone else here bikes and what it has done for them

all i know is that any time you see the bikers who wear the spandex suits they are always damn thin and have muscular legs.

so obviously if you bike a LOT it will get the job done.

biking is great, but for losing belly fat you need to adjust your diet -- dropping carbs, etc. -- otherwise you'll just build up an appetite and eat even more.

what's more, the most efficient way to ride a bike is head down, which is hard when you're draggin a belly around (depending on its general massiveness). one solution is to get a bike with adjustable handlebars, or count on replacing them one day.

Thanks for the info. I eat a lot of bread, but cut down on soda (still drink some though) and try to drink more water. So Its carbs I need to watch out for, and I thought eating them vegi-subs from the subshop was a good thing. Guess not.

I got a Giant mountain bike over the summer and lost 10 pounds in a month. I rode it every day, got into heavy urban riding like jumps and stairs that coordinate your whole body. Stairs are fun, start at one or 2 at a time and work your way up(or down). I totally recommend it, its a very fun exercise. My old town was in the hills and every way to get to the main street was uphill.

It will work wonders but only if you push yourself. Mountain bikes are more fun than road bicycles IMO because you can do more tricks with them and they can handle curbs and other fun stuff. I started lifting and riding again and that is also a good combination, but I have never been as cut as I was this summer riding an hour or more a day over rough terrain. With no change in diet I might add.

Also others may not condone this but one of my favorite things to do is smoke some good herb and go on a nice long ride to the beach...not the best for cardio though lol.

there's more to it than just cutting carbs, but that's a start. click on the stickies to get some ideas.

i've certainly lost significant bodyfat biking, but unless you plan on doing it all year (summer & winter included), you'll gain a good bit of it back unless you have an overall diet & fitness plan.

Not all of them should wear Spandex (especially if the size is XXL) but for the rest, we're pretty then but still need to do upper body workouts to balance things out.

I cut the soda, carbs, and processed foods, and ride 20-miles three times a week. I lost 35lbs in three months.....of gut fat. Be sure you eat those six meals a day.

I used to cycle...

Not as a hobby or sport though, I used it as transportation. For all 4 years of highschool I biked 8km to school, and 8km back. Now these weren't pleasure cruises, I was borderline late most of the time so I was pedaling as hard(literally) as I could, and could usually make the 8km in just under minutes. I used the hardest gear too, in all 4 years I never shifted to the lower numbers.

The product was a pretty powerful set of legs, even before squatting I had some decent mass down there, so that's helped.

Biking is good, but don't do it anywhere near leg day.

What I'm starting to do for cardio is alternating between eliptical, treadmill, bike, and row machine. It's gettin cold outside now(went down to -1C last night), so sled pulling is out of the question till spring.

But yeah, +1 for cycling.

If you cut your carbs be prepared to bonk. Just limit the amount of processed foods that you eat and stick with the naturals. Also watch out for the mainstream sports drinks, they're loaded with sugar. A couple are like soda with additional sodium and potassium, not good.
