Im finding that when I speak to people, usually i speak quite quickly, sometimes even finishing speaking before I finish thinking of the whole phrase.

It may be because im a 'visual' person, and those kinds tend to speak quickly.

I know the simple answer is to talk to people more... but yaknow sometimes you're just too rushed to really sit and talk with somebody, or it just slips your mind, then later you think 'oh, i should've practiced speaking there!'

Anyways, what are some ways to slow down speech that you guys have tried? Recording yourself speak?

If you are a visual person maybe you should imagine yourself reading the words you want to speak before you say them. I do this and it slows you down a bit, but it is not too slow.

Hear are somethings you can do.

1). Put a pen between your teeth and pratice giving speeches, it slows you down forcing yourself to ennunciate.

2). Recite "I am the very model of a modern major general, i have information on animal, vegetable, mineral, I know the kings of england and the battles historical, from waterloo to marathon in order categorical." Do it slowly at first, then faster. This forces you to ennunciate and pronounce words, and it forces you to think about the lines, which will slow you down.

3). When you are talking with someone, remind yourself to go slow when they are speaking. Keep doing that and you will slow down, eventually it will become second nature.

4). When you have expelled about breath will talking finish your sentence, finish your thought, pause(it should not be more than a second) breath and continue the conversation.

5). What you say is "important," keep that in mind, when its important you will take the time to explain it by speaking slowly.

Well this is the stuff I use if I have to give a public speech, or research presentation for a class. Best of luck.

the stutter's technique

I use to stutter alot. So i went for speech therapy. A big part of the therapy is learning to slow down.
One exercise is called the stretched syllable method. Simply try to hold the first syllable of the word for at least 1 second.
In your head, it might seem like an eternity...but it isn't. Combine this with taking a full breath between sentences and you'll slow down in no time.

I just said this, and just hearing this ridiculous arrangement of words leave my mouth caused me to burst into laughter.

It is tricky, though, kind of a tongue twister. I can see how it would help.

Still funny as hell though.

Hey, thanks for the words. I'm going to recite them and see if I can pronounce the tones clearly.

I have the same problem; I talk too fast, and occasionally "skip" the middle of each word. Speech therapy is expensive, and they're usually for major probs. I think the best way is to practice tongue twisters, and record yourself talking.
