Just curious. I've been wanting to grow my hair longer for a while now but I just don't know how to wear it and not look like a dork. I've been so use to having my hair short and geling it up in the front that I don't know any other way.

If you do have longer hair, how do you wear it? Any pics of good ways to style and gel longer hair? I'm not talking about hair down to your back, barely shoulder length is what I mean.

Don't do anything with it, if that makes sense. Face it, if you're growing your hair then you just have to not care so much. Don't gel it around... I mean you could gel it to the side, like an emo. If you want to be an emo, haha! I don't.

Another tip: don't really cut it while it's growing. Yes, the hair in the back will be longer than in the front. If you even it out you'll look like a girl (or 5yr old boy). Let it grow freely, have messy hair for about a year.

Once it's growing, ask some girls for ideas, or have them style you! (pro tip: NOT YOUR MUM).

Oh, how old are you? If you are young, you can get away with messy hair no problem, until it's long enough.

P.S. I have a long ponytail (in my language it literally means horse-**** haha), but i tie it together pretty tight and neat so it doesn't look like a hippie. At times I wear it open when I feel like it. Well if you don't have a baby face you can look like a rocker.

Mine is long as well. For most of the time, it's tied back. The only time I really let it down is when I go out. When growing it long, you're going to have a 5hitty period where your hair just looks like crap. I actually ended up cutting it once because of it and started all over again. Just endure it, and it'll get itself to a nice length where it looks good. I'm happy with my hair long, and women love playing with it because it's usually nicer than theirs :D

I had long hair for 4 years. I thought it was kind of cool for awhile, and I don't regret doing it, but I cut it off at the beginning of this summer and I don't think I'd ever grow it out again.

Might as well make a list of the pros and cons of long hair:

Pros:
  • You can look kind of badass if you have strong masculine facial features.
  • Some girls are into the rebel, rockstar, or fantasy (think Lord of the Rings) look. However, at the very least, it acts as a peacock and gets you female attention.
  • No more paying $25 for a haircut every month!

Cons:

  • You can look androgynous and weird if you have feminine (or weak masculine) facial features.
  • Most girls aren't into the rebel/rockstar/fantasy look. I'd say it's a mild turn-off for 30-40% or so of the attractive female population. Probably a turn-on for 5-10% of said attractive women. The rest are fairly neutral or tolerant of it.
  • You are now spending $25 a month on haircare products.
  • You'll look like a bum for about a year and a half when you're growing it out. The shaggy stage is really only socially acceptable during high school or college. This is the point where most people say "Fuck it!" and quit and cut their shag because it looks terrible and takes forever to grow out.
  • Your head gets really hot in the summer or when you're doing any strenuous physical activity. It is incredibly inconvenient if you participate in any sports.
  • You'll grow out little straggler hairs that find ways to poke out from the rest of the hair and look sloppy. These little assholes also find a way to poke out and brush against your face and get in your eyes. Wind is now a sworn enemy.
  • Having to shampoo, condition, and comb out long hair turns your normal 15 minute shower/shave morning habit into a 45+ minute ordeal. And I usually just combed my hair out and put it into a simple ponytail most of the time! 45 minutes to an hour! This was probably my biggest problem with having long hair.
  • There's nothing you can really do with your man-mane (aside from a simple ponytail/braid or just wearing it natural) that doesn't require spending a shit-ton of time and money on product, salon visits, and styling time. Kind of the faggy if you ask me.
  • Long hair shows dirt/grease hair a lot more, and a lot faster, than short hair.
  • It gives people another target toward which they can direct judgment and criticism (think cops/bosses/girlfriends' parents etc). My friend's dad once said something wise: "Don't give people a reason to be against if you don't have to."
  • It's also a considerable liability if you get into a fistfight (for obvious reasons).

So, you decide if it's worth it.

I went through a two/three year phase where I had long hair!

All I did to it was let it grow and just brush it everyday and that was it.

I would advise against long hair, purely for the fact its unmanagable and in winter months it's a nightmare, especially if there's strong winds about.

Yeah it depends on the texture of your hair as well. I'm half black so my hair is sort of fine and it dries when wind picks it up. I actually chemically relaxed it so it's easier to make it straight (my hair is naturally curly)

The cons are what serialized describes, but you have to weigh if it's worth it. Every 2 days i wash my hair, blowdry it, and flat iron it. It takes about an hour and a half total. I think it's worth it. I've been wearing it like this for almost 3 years and I hate my curly hair. That was much more unmanageable and unpleasant looking in my opinion.

I've had long hair for a couple years now and most women say that it looks better than how I used to have it. The issues were well covered above. My biggest problem is that I don't use a hairdryer, so the longer the hair the longer it takes to dry out. I'll use the towel and then my hands to shake what water I can out of it, and then I try to set it in the right position at the final stages of drying so that it looks good. The one advantage for me of having long hair is that I can just have a nice soft feel and don't use any product in it. It looks great until wind comes around, and I'm getting really sick and tired of being "afraid" of wind. Yes it also sucks when exercising. The other issue is that while my style was somewhat unique when I first started doing it way back when, I've seen a lot more dopplegangers out there lately. I've even gotten people making Justin Bieber references now that he's blown up. I'm about at the end of what I can take as far as this goes.

The problem then comes what to do next? I just have to find a new style w/o chopping it all off. I used to have super long hair when I was a kid and decided to just cut it very short one day, but I don't think history will repeat itself.

The trouble with hair and haircuts is that when you get one, you're usually stuck with it at least for a while, and they're quite important to how you look and also your confidence.

I'll have to go find a new stylist up here in Portland seeing as how I actually live here now and not LA.

Coming from a girl...

Long hair on a man can be very sexy. I love wild curly hair. Don't get mad TM, which you are going to do, but the fact that you got a perm, and you blowdry and flat iron your hair is really gay to me! I knew there was a reason I hated your hair. I bet it looks great when it is natural.

I love long hair on a man, when it makes them look more wild and untame. If you have curly hair that looks like an afro as it grows out, that is SO SEXY to me. Otherwise it is usually creepy and greasy looking, or flat out gay.

Examples of gayness:
Gay, but he almost pulls it off. but not quite: http://www.ronalfy.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/man_long_hair.jpg
Super gay: http://coolmenshairstyles.com/images/2010/01/mens-long-hairstyle-2010.jpg
Super duper gay: http://www.q80s.com/wp-content/man-long-hair.jpg

I think the sexiest cut on most men is a simple short, close to the head cut.

In the business world you will not be taken seriously. Whether its fair or not, you look like someone who doesn't care. Great for your lifestyle, reflecting your feelings (which seems like something you are very into if you have enough time to sit around and think about how to wear your hair), but the world does not run on your feelings. You will instantly have strikes against you, and will not be taken seriously by people who make decisions. Get a haircut, hippie.

Wow. Just...wow.

Anyway, at least Alle_Gory knew where I was going. The picture he provided was exactly what I was talking about in my original post in the thread.
