An Elizabeth High School teacher is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student during a football trip while her two children and their baby sitter were asleep in the same motel room, according to an arrest affidavit.
Darcie Esson, 32, posted a $25,000 bond Tuesday after spending Monday night in the Douglas County jail, where she was held on a charge of felony sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. Police arrested her at her Parker home.
Esson, an English teacher, is on administrative leave pending an investigation. Elizabeth C-1 School District officials learned of the allegations last Wednesday, after a student told them a 17-year-old football player had been bragging about having sex with Esson.
District Superintendent Bob Neel said Esson, who has taught in the district for three years, was considered a "very dedicated teacher."
"I was very astounded when it all started breaking," Neel said. "We were saddened by it. Anytime something like this happens, we tend to take it personally in this profession. We are held to a higher standard by the public."
Esson declined to comment Tuesday.
Neel said the student involved is still attending school, but might face discipline depending on what the investigation reveals.
According to the affidavit, the student had known Esson for at least a year. His cell phone records show more than 120 calls or text messages made or sent to Esson.
Esson's arrest affidavit gives the following account of the alleged events:
Esson went to Glenwood Springs on Nov. 11, where the Elizabeth football team faced Rifle in a playoff game. Esson, whose divorce had become final the previous day, took her children, ages 4 and 8, and a female student from the school to baby-sit them.
Elizabeth High School Principal James Trevino, who traveled with the team, paid for Esson's room with his personal credit card.
"I know that he is devastated by it," Neel said about Trevino, adding that he doesn't think the principal did anything wrong.
After the game, Esson went out for drinks with other parents, one of whom drove her back to her hotel room. The male student left the motel where he was staying with team members and went to Esson's room, where she allegedly offered him alcohol.
When asked about what happened next, the boy initially denied anything had happened. He later admitted going to Esson's room and said she was drunk and "coming on" to him.
After Esson kissed him, he said "one thing led to another" and that they had sex on the floor of the room while Esson's children and baby sitter were asleep, the affidavit said.

I guess it's that time of year again. I'm kind of over this stuff to an extent but two things strike out to me in this case.
1. She's being charged with sexual assult because she was in a position of power. This is a felony charge, not a misdemeanor like the other female teachers who have been in this situation were hit with. She may be facing some serious jail time if convicted.
2. Her kids and babysitter were in the room. I find that reprehensable and I hope she loses custody of them. It's bad enough to have a slut for a mom but at least have some descession and don't be a sl*t in front of your 4 and 8 year old children
