Is it a myth that the older you get the less likely you can gain muscle mass or is it a myth?

Does anyone know?

Thanks

Testosterone decreases with age, so yeah, it gets harder.

Just use basic supplements,a multivitamin, creatine, protein powder and sleep and you should be able to keep up with the young guns! Good Luck!

If it gets harder, how much harder does it get and when does it start getting harder?

What are the prime ages to be gaining mass? When do testosterone levels start declining?

I'm no scientist but from what I've soaked up over the years the consensus seems to be that testosterone starts to decline very rapidly when you're around 40-50 years old (I didn't retain the actual details), with the peak being between 18-25.

I wonder if that peak is based on average non athletic males or all males. Perhaps it is universal. In bodybuilding, it does seem that the later 20s and early 30s are the peak sizes rather than the mid 20s but that may just be due to time invested in the sport.

What suppliments to you recommend that may help the testorone. I am in that age group middle age... but I eat lots of skinless chicken, take a multi but it does seem I don't have that drive or strength I once had.

I have heard things on DHEA but not sure about that but does GNC or Wal-mart carry anything I can buy with out going to the doc and asking for humna growth hormones?

Thanks

I'm 31 and I haven't had trouble putting on mass.

My test has to be higher now than it was in my early to mid-20's when I was chubby and out of shape with little LBM.

youre at your peak at 25, then it drops 1/3 % per year after 25, then plummets arround 55, give or take 5 years in some men.

1/3% a year in 10 years is only 3%, 20 years 6%, and most men vary by more than 3-6% anyways, so its almost nothing until youre around 55

Could someone give me the lowdown on Creatine how it works or how to take?

Is it pill form or powder?

I have read it helps in weight gain but if I am working my ab's will it help keep them firm?

Other word I don't what the middle age gut to surface while taking it but a firm midsection and muscles.

Thanks for any info.

When i'm older i'll probably run HGH until the day I die. It's a viable option if you have the money and are serious about training and having a good physique.

Gaining muscle as you age is definately harder, but no where near impossible. I've read articles of people who started working out in their 30's-mid 40's that now compete in bodybuilding competitions. As for testosterone, not sure if you were aware of this but you'll create more when you start working out.

Creatine:

-Usually in powder form
-Likely the most studied supplement ever
-Safe... as long as you don't take too much (same as everything else)
-*can* lead to bloating... so you may not get a gut but your midsection might get a little bit bigger.
-Helps a bit with gaining muscle mass. Although, I have heard of some non-responders who claim it doesn't work... I don't know about this as their diet/workout may not have been in check.
-has worked well for me when I used it.

Thanks for the added info and yes I have heard that working out creates testostrone which is good.

OK forgot something.

Let's say I start using Creatine and I have great results. Now this stuff you only use for a certain amount of time and I guess and you stop.

When you stop will the gains you created in muscle mass remain or will you loose the mass until you start back on it even while still working out or will you loose the strenth while not taking it etc.,?

I haven't read anywhere about this so maybe the ones that used it or are can comment on it.

I guess the reason I ask is I don't want to become slave to this stuff.

Thanks

a thread from a month and a half ago:

basically, there are two effects: (1) intramuscular water retention; (b) creatine itself is energy for lifting.

the first effect is believed to aid muscle development. the temporary water gains that make you look fuller will disappear after you stop taking it, but there are at least two reasons to believe it can help. i've never used the stuff, but this appears to be the consensus on how it could be beneficial.

if you're gauging your progress based on ever-increasing weights (strength), then you shouldn't need to worry too much one way or the other about size.
