? about AVI DVD-R

I came up on a couple of movies that can only be watched through my computer because it's on a CompUSA DVD avi file. About how long do these usually lasts? I was told it'll start "rotting" within a year or two. Can anyone tell me your experiences?

I have no idea what CompUSA could do to encrypt these files and why they would only be good for a yr. I have a DVD player that is capable of playing avi files burned on cdr or dvdr from philips, I know a few other companies have released dvd players with similiar capabilities.
