if you've never had a dog, don't get one. If you plan on having kids some day don't get them a dog. Buy them a bird, or a turtle, or a tarantula or something like that. My parents got me a dog when I was 10 years old. That was 12 years ago. Now, she's got heart worms and I took her to the vet, but it's too late. She just started to swell up and I just thought she was getting fat from being so old, I mean I've given her stuff for heartworms. Turns out the worms have almost completely shut down the right side of her heart, and the swelling is due to all the backed up fluid. I don't have the money to have her euthanized, and I don't have the stomach or the heart to put a bullet in her. So pretty much right now she can't walk, she can barely look around, she doesn't respond half the time when I say her name. She's just lying there getting weaker and waiting to drown on her own fluids, and I feel like I can't do sh!t but just stand here and watch. I was just a kid when I got her and I know she's just a dog, but I LOVE this dog. She's extremely intelligent, I've never had to train her, she does everything on her own. Whenever I was stressed or upset about something she always KNEW and she would come over to me, wagging her tail and trying to lick my face until I would start laughing. I knew it was going to happen one day, but I never thought she would go like this. If I had known back then that I could feel this torn up inside about a dog, I would have told my parents I didn't want one. So yeah don't get your kids a dog. This crap is brutal.

It doesn't matter now, she died a little while ago. She was looking worse, so I stayed up but she looked like she might hang for another day. I woke up and she was gone. I'm just glad she's not in pain any more.

I feel you young brother. I've had dogs all of my life and it will never get easier when it's thier time but it's important to remember the joy they bring into our lives on a daily basis. We have 5 dogs (all girls) and each bring something unique to our family.

My heart and prayers go out to you and your dog. My only question is why the vet would let your dog go back home in that condition? They have a code of ethics and should never have left an animal to suffer with that serious of a heartworm infection. Fvck, I would have given the vet my credit card number. That's a fact.

Well, see she wasn't that bad whenever I took her to the vet. He didn't suggest euthanization, but he told me the prognosis wasn't good, then he gave me some water pills to give her that were supposed to decrease the fluid so that maybe she could live a little longer. It didn't work though and her health just got worse. I miss her, but she was probably ready to go considering her condition. It's good to know somebody understands. I do have another dog, he is an Australian Cattle Dog, and he's about 6 months old. It sucks to know I'm going to go through the same thing with him one day.

Yeah go find a vet who will do it for free or won't charge it all. Maybe the animal shelter does it for free.

Its best to get it over with then let your dog suffer. This is part of life when you take care of something you become attach to it. Women for example come and go but a dog will be with you till the end and love you till the end. All it asks that you feed him, walk him and on occasions play with him.

WHY DOGS ARE BETTER THAN WOMEN

When a dog licks your ear it has no ulterior motive.
Dogs quite happily sit and watch the football/ cricket/ motor racing without complaining.
Dogs don't want to take you shopping.
Dogs don't say "YOU DID WHATTTT!!!".
They don't expect you to change a tyre for them.
Dogs don't complain when a light bulb blows.

There's a longer time between bouts of PMS with a dog.
Dogs don't mind if you leave the seat up, in fact they prefer it.
Dogs don't mind if they don't get flowers.
Dogs don't get suspicious if they DO get flowers.
Dogs don't invite their mothers over to stay.
Dogs don't like cats.
There is no incorrect wash cycle for a dog's clothes.
Dogs don't make remarks about your mates and their habits.
Dogs bite the Avon lady.
A dog's already have a fur coat and Greenpeace don't mind.
Dogs don't care what you say to other drivers.
Dogs will defend you if you say too much to other drivers.
A dog doesn't care if you talk to your neighbour's
wife/ daughter over the fence.

WHY DOGS AND WOMEN ARE THE SAME
- Neither open the bonnet and check anything from one year to the next.
- Both ignore "Wet Paint" signs.
- Both do silent little farts and then look at you.
-Both leave their scent wherever they go.
-Both sniff you for any strange scents.
-Neither understands cash flow.
-Neither can paint.
-Neither will change a fuse.
- Both shed their hair all over the house.
- Neither will wash or polish the car.
- Both try to look cute until you take them home permanently..

WHY WOMEN ARE BETTER THAN DOGS
Women rarely pee on your car's wheels.
Women can cook. (and do the washing and ironing)
Women don't normally drag their butt along the ground whilst you're talking to friends.
Women generally smell better.
Women don't step on your crotch quite so frequently (thank goodness).
Women don't dig holes in your new lawn.
Women rarely hump your leg in public.
Women don't chew on your shoes.
Women are allowed in most restaurants.
Women can let themselves out when they need a pee at 2am.

Wow, you're regretting all the time you spent loving your dog and would rather have never known it, because it's dying?

It's a part of life buddy, your best friends, your parents, your children, everyone you know is going to die one day. Would you rather not know them either?

My dog was killed in May this year, he was 3 and a half years old. I accidentally left him outside in the morning when I drove to school, apparently he tried to follow me and got hit by a car right in front of our home. I was at school by then, so I had no idea. Two hours later I drove home and he was nowhere to be found, I called the neighbors, drove street to street for about half an hour calling his name, then finally went to the humane society(pound, whatever). They told me he got hit by a car, and was lying on the side of the road alive for about an hour before somebody noticed him moving. They picked him up and rushed him to an animal hospital, but by then it was too late, he was bleeding internally and his lungs were filling with blood. They called my mom (who had no idea about all this at the time) and told her the situation, and asked her if it was okay to give him 'the needle'.

I cried for two days knowing it was my fault, that he was on the side of the road for a full hour in agony with broken ribs, a concussion, and two broken legs, but after that I got over it and realized that anyone can die at any moment outside the realm of fault, so it's pointless to place blame, instead just remember and honor their memory.

Would I rather not have had him, because he died like that? Hell no man, he was the best dog I've ever known, he may not have been the smartest around cars, but he had spirit, and he was like a brother to me. We had great times together, priceless times, and I would never throw that away because he had to die.

Here's some photos of him, Bailey was his name.

there are products out there that you can put on your dog, on the back of the neck , once a month to prevent this.
Interceptor is one : It stops tissue larvae, deposited by mosquitoes beneath your pet's skin, from developing into adult worms. It is necessary to test for circulating immature heartworms or adult heartworms before using Interceptor. A negative heartworm test, performed by your veterinarian, is necessary before starting any heartworm prevention drug. Interceptor for dogs is also effective in controlling intestinal parasites like hookworms, whipworms, and roundworms. This keeps your pet free of internal parasites year around. Interceptor heartworm prevention comes in a flavor-tab and is given to your dog orally once a month. It has been safely tested in over 75 breeds of dogs, pregnant females, breeding males and females, and puppies four weeks of age or older and over two pounds of body weight.

Well, that's not exactly what I mean. I don't regret the time that we had I loved every minute of it, but I'm just saying if I had thought about what could happen when I was a kid, I probably wouldn't have wanted one.

No, no, no. This type of self loathing and regret will bleed out of every pore you have. Don't let what nature decides be how you base the decisions in your future.

What you should do is love the dog you do have that much more and open yourself to him more than ever. Let the other's memory live through the one sitting in the chair watching Family Guy with you.

Time has a way to heal any wound. Though at first it will hurt a bit and scab, eventually the scab will come off and the skin will become as new and a bit thicker.

You'll be fine.

I feel for you with all my heart man. I've been through this 3 times, it never gets easier. There will always be a "tomorrow," and with comes the chance to feel better. And once you feel better you will look back at the times you spent with your dog and cherish her even more and feel lucky to have known her.

She's still around, you just don't know it yet.

Yeah you guys are right. This is the first time I've felt attached to something in a long time. I don't get attached to money, material, relationships, I've removed almost all negative emotion. I thought I had removed it all until this. I think it's a healthy emotion to grieve. I guess the thing is that you can do that, but you can't dwell on it or the circumstances; and you just have to cherish the time that you had, and move on. Thanks guys.

I know what you're going through Epic. I had a big Malamute mix for 14 years, and it broke my heart when the vet told me he had inoperable cancer. I had to go home from work because I couldn't stop crying.

The pain of the loss will fade in time and you'll remember the good times much sharper.
