AlphaBay taken down by law enforcement across 3 countries, WSJ says

Alleged founder Alexandre Cazes found dead in a Thai jail cell.

AlphaBay, one of the largest Tor-hidden drug websites that sprang up in the wake of Silk Road, has been shuttered for good after a series of law enforcement raids and arrests.

The site mysteriously went dark earlier this month. Some users on Reddit suspected an "exit scam," in which AlphaBay's founders had shuttered the site and absconded with piles of bitcoins.

According to The Wall Street Journal, which reported the news on Thursday, police in the United States, Canada, and Thailand collaborated to arrest Alexandre Cazes, who allegedly was the head of the online operation. The Canadian citizen was arrested on July 5 in Thailand, the same day that two raids on residences in Quebec, Canada, were executed. On Wednesday, Cazes was found dead, hanged in his Thai jail cell.

The Bangkok Post, citing Thai police sources, reported that Cazes had been living in Thailand for about eight years. Thai authorities also impounded "four Lamborghini cars and three houses worth about 400 million baht ($11.7 million) in total."

Cazes' name does not appear in a search of federal court records, but if any charges do exist, they may still be sealed.

Ross Ulbricht, the young Texan who was convicted of creating and operating Silk Road, was given a double life sentence—which was upheld earlier this year on appeal. Ulbricht was also known as "Dread Pirate Roberts."

The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to Ars' request for comment.

Crazy story. Sucks that kid took went down that path. Sounds like he was an IT genus who could have made a fortune the legal way.

Hansa markets site was seized as well I think last night. Looks like these sites are falling like dominos.

He was born and grew up close to my city. News making a big deal about it

Interesting to see internet having an underground world

Yet, how private it really is since all USA military satellites are used for internet and wireless, recording everything in NSA harbor

Getting the tor browser just to look around is enlightening. There are sites like ebay/amazon with every drug in existence, delivered to your door. Homeland security raided a kid not too far from me and caught him with several pounds of coke and meth. He was a total nobody who had just ordered it all off the Internet.

The government is fine with pushers and drug addicts as long as they live under control, when they try to innovate or do the same by themselves as "free citizens" they get busted.

I mean not even spree killers get punished as hard as the silk road founder, sounds legit to you?

The dark web is so encrypted it would take super computers years upon years to decrypt it all. The Government now has control over a certain amount of nodes from the dark web. Once they gain control to a very high %, someone will create a new type encryption and the process will repeat itself. Its a very sophisticated type of encryption thats nearly impossible to crack.

I see but they all need a physical place... servers... and servers are usually governement/military owned ... It must be easily tracable... no need to decode :p

However, crazy how sci-fi is becoming reality

Most of those sites change server locations every so often. So even of they they figoure where the server is, they have to start over again to find the new location. Now it seems its becoming easier for them to find the server the more they decode the darknet encryption. The USPS also had job openings for people to screen dark web packages, try and trace info connected to bit coins, ect.

The owner of Alpha Bay was using servers in his own IT company's building. Not sure how true that statement is, but thats what I read somewhere. Servers were in Canada, he was living in Thailand.

Like Piratebay in Sweden. Except Sweden was protecting him (pirating was légal there)

The Québec hacker had few shell corporation.

You know how they got to him?

His childhood hotmail adress!
His childhood email adress still active and hé had an account on a french IT website linked to it.

That e-mail was also linked has à backup to the darkweb, for when Server crashes

The guy had an open target on his back once they linked his total admin control and his backup.

I am sûre they spent more time and money searching his shellcorporations than his online activity

Hé forgot his 101code to criminality (never leave traces, never be directly involved in the act)
