Hey fellas, I was flexing my gut in the mirror today and saw the outline of what is, god save me, a 6 pack. Although when you have a 6 pack, you shouldn't have to flex to see them, right?

a good six-pack wouldn't need flexing just to be visible. if you need to flex, at least u only got a few more sit-ups left compared to other guys like me.

i only get a good sixpack in the morning without flexing because i haven't eaten anything. once i start eating i need to flex to see it.

do u think it's possible to have a sixpack that doesn't need to be flexed for u to see during the day when you've been eating?

i don't know if it's about situps or any exercises. is it not about bf%?

Of course its possible. If you're abs are big enough and your bf is low enough youll see a 6pack without flexing.

It's largely genetic. WHen I could do 50 situps/minute and was a competitive swimmer with body fat of about 5% I *still* could only see the 3 out of 6.

What kind of ab exercises do you guys recommend? Any good sites that give a no bullsh1t guide to efficiently working them out?

I have tried this exercise a couple of times and let's say isn't very easy ;)

While in a seated position, bend your knees and bring the feet in so they are about 10-12 inches from your body. Keep your feet flat on the floor. Hunch your torso forward, tuck your chin into your chest, and hold your hands on the outsides of your knees. Now lean back while maintaining a hunched position until your arms are completely extended (still holding on to the outsides of your knees). At this point, let go of your knees and extend the arms forward.

OH MY GOD STOP with the ab exercises !!!

You can do sit-ups and crunches till you're blue in the face and you won't see the six-pack !!

The only way to get a clearly defined ab-section is diet and cardio. And no, you shouldn't have to flex to see it if your bodyfat is 10 % or below

Don't get me wrong, ab exercises are useful - but all they will do is make your ab muscles bigger and harder. You will NOT see a 6-pack unless you strip the bodyfat with diet and cardio !

Do you only concentrate on your 6pack? Do you work your other muscles?

Genetics and diet are certainly important, probably the most important factors, but indeed you can build them just like other muscles. You may want to try adding some weight to your ab exercises. Use leg weights on reverse crunches and 5-10lb. plates on your chest for crunches. It helped me when I couldn't get past a plateau with my abs.

Or just do weighted situps

Bingo! That's just what I was thinking. I'm sure that you guys DO have a ripped six pack already...under layers of fat. Figure out how many calories you need per each day depending on your metabolism and your activity level. Then from there, you can slowly start decreasing your calories so that you're dropping the BF while still eating a sufficient amount to retain the muscle you have.

I wish i had a six pack but i got too much fat covering it and probably not enough muscle but i'm working on it. I have gained a bit of weight recently but i am going to start losing weight again and i have got some weights to use at home now so i am going to be working out hard and watching what i eat from now on and my aim is to get into the best shape i have ever been in. :p

I have the same problem. In the morning I look ripped. Until I start my daily diet. Soon as I eat my big healthy breakfast my six pack dissappears. By the end of the day I have drank so much water and eatin loads of food. I look like I haven't been working on my ab section at all. I have a really high metabolism so I have to eat a lot to build muscle.

And what if you already have a low BF% I'm 5'6 132lbs and I've used the handheld body fat analyzer machine and I keep getting between 5.6% and 6% My stomach is basicly flat with no definition.

It's all about the external obliques above your ribs... It looks really ill when you get your bf down and your muscles big in that area... try jumping up and down in the mirror while flexing if you're not quite there yet...

if your gym has a torso machine, i highly recommend using it. Dumbell sidebends are the shiznit as well.

I've been doing HIT stuff 5 days a week now, for two weeks, and I'm already seeing some results, not something to scream VICTORY for, but it's definately working. And I personally thought I was unable to get a 6 pack :)
