The US doesn’t stand a chance against playing up against the powerhouses of Brazil, Germany, Italy, or the one other powerhouse which I forgot. Over here, soccer is still a miniscule sport compared to the nation’s pre-occupation with football, basketball, and baseball. By contrast, the whole rest of the world is fanatical about soccer.

Germany and Italy are not that great. US should have beaten Germany in 2002. -that was a handball-

Wait til Freddy hits a growth spurt next winter.

England.

I hope Rooney dominates, but I also hope that Beckham wins it for England with a free kick. Mostly to shut up the guys who hate this guy ONLY because how famous he is. Down with haters.

If you currently have too many women chasing you, calling you, harassing you, knocking on your door at 2 o'clock in the morning... then I have the simple solution for you.

Just read my free ebook 22 Rules for Massive Success With Women and do the opposite of what I recommend.

This will quickly drive all women away from you.

i don't want to hype it up, but i think we are in with a real good chance.

so many class players, and options, just hope they can gel as a team.

rooney, he may be ugly, but he is AMAZING!!! i rate him top 10 in the world easily, not bad for a 19 year old.

Well, in sports, “close” doesn’t count. A team either wins or it doesn’t.

I understand that shoulda woulda coulda doesn't mean much. I am just saying that they are not in separate leagues

One of the South American teams, though I think that England will get to the semis at least.

Portugal might also do well now Figos out of retirement - they've got some class players.

that's true, but if a team loses because of an unseen foul, you can't state that that team is weaker than the opponent... they just had bad luck, i saw the match and USA would have scored that goal. (btw, i'm not american and i don't support the USA, but i'm just stating the truth).

anyway, i think that the most likely for the victory are brazil, italy and england. why you put greece in there and not czech republic?!

I agree with including the Czechs.
Nedved is awesome. Greece did win Euro 2004 so really any of the usual in the top 15 teams could pull it off.

I honestly think that Brazil is the best team. If I had to choose now, I would pick them.

Serbia Montenegro will have a good chance if they qualify for the World Cup. They have some veterans that have been on the team for more than 8 years. Currently they are behind Spain by 1 point but have played 1 game less in their qualification group.

I would take Brazil! Record speaks for itself! Germany will be tough also, considering they further have a home ground advantage! Of which is a PROOVEN advantage!

It is small in the US, but they sure did do well last world cup! Also, teams like Japan, and even the top african nations are diong a lot better now on the world stage! The "powerhouses" of world soccer are being bought further back to the feild! Just look at Argentina last world cup, number 1 qualifying record in South American history (if I remember correctly), yet didnt even make it out of their group stage! Sweden, England, Argentina and Nigeria, damn hard group and at one time, would have been a walk through for Argentina!

Where are Ireland?

Ireland play brilliantly against the bigger teams but against the 'weaker' nations they stumble now and again.

They play best under pressure and when they're the underdog - you should have included them in your poll.

i can't get whether you are joking or you are serious, but do you really think that someone could vote for ireland as the most likely team to win?!?!?!

What are you Italian? We whooped your arses in 1994. Only Brazil did likewise and they couldn't do it over 90 minutes.

We also did well in 2002 despite losing our best player, and national hero, Roy Keane.

Ireland will win in 2006 and Roy Keane will lift the cup!

US football

Talking 'bout real football here. What we call "football" here doesn't fit the term so well, truth to be told.

The sport may not be as big as other sports in the US, but we've got a hell of a population advantage over most other nations, so as more of us Yanks play the game, we're bound to become more and more competitive. It's just in the numbers.

I'd have to favor Brazil on talent, but Germany gets my pick on account of the home court advantage. Still, when there are so few goals anybody can make a quick exit ...

i'm sure usa will get at least to the second round, probably to the quarters. so will probably do brazil, italy, england, sweden and argentina.

to the guy who was talking about ireland... ok man, wales whooped our 4sses more recently than 1994 (exactly in 2002) and slovenia in 2003... according to your reasoning, the 3 most likely teams to win 2006 world cup are (in order of recent victories against italy):

1. slovenia
2. wales
3. ireland

i guess you are probably right

World football doesn't revolve around Italy I hate to tell you. I just don't like the fact you disrespected my country. I urge you to check out Group 4's table. We are in a tough group with Switzerland and France and guess who is top? That's right - Ireland! We went to Paris and came away with a 0-0 score and had chances to win. That's nothing to laugh at.

We also haven't lost a competitive World Cup qualifying match at home since 1993 and in order to get to the 2002 World Cup we had to beat Holland 1-0 at home which was not easy.

There is every chance that we can qualify automatically and force France into a play-off. Are you telling me that's easy? And let's not forget it was the small nation of Greece that won Euro 2004 so it's not impossible that we could win the World Cup if all our players are there, especially Roy Keane.

By the way Jay-X, are you aware that on August 17, Ireland will be playing a friendly against Italy in Dublin? That should be very interesting.:D
