I was thinking about getting some from walmart and was wondering how much they are and what size to start with.

What range do they have? Go for lighter ones to build up muscle, then get some heavier ones, no point going for 20's straight away.

They can be pretty expensive... I've seen them from $5 a-piece to $15 a-piece at different walmarts{different brands too}

If you can't carry them from the back of the store to the front holding them over your head there probably giong to be to heavy....

i'd recomend starting at 10-15 and using some 1 and 2 pound weights to gradually move up...

Thats my advice good luck

I have a different Idea.

First of all, for price, they can run about .50 - 1.50 / lb. That means that a 15 lb weight is gonna run you 8-20 bucks or so.... just like capi said.

I'd say get a pair of 15's, and a pair of like 45's or something up there. You'll be able to do some heavier exercises without pvssy weights (like lunges, DB Squats, Rows, Tricep extensions, incline bench, flat bench, decline bench, shrugs) and stimulate muscle growth.

I've got an even better idea. Why not invest the 20-30 bucks you planned on spending on dumbbells and use it to get a month's membership at a local gym. Then you can use all of theirs, and all of the rest of their weight equipment too - for as long as you want. If you don't like going after the end of the month, you'll know just what weight you should get.

There's no sense in that.. I mean, the whole reason why you go to the gym is to get big in the first place. Dumbbells at home isn't going to turn you into some ripped guy anyway - you'll only get that way by eating right and targeting each muscle group... something that is better done at a gym.

I go to the YMCA. At the one I go to, I've seen everything from 90 year olds to hugely obese people in the weightroom (well, the room with the machines... not so much the free weights...) If they can find the motivation to get there, I think that you can definitely do it too.

Those little dumbbells arent going to do you any good

that would mean you'd be benching/squating/deadlifting/shoulderpressing/curling
the exact same weight - thats no good

trust me, just go to the gym that will get you the results you want

I got a set of dumbells today.

All they are is a bar maybe 14 inches long, and you put weights on it and it has a weight clip on the end.

Result? I got a ****load of weights so I can do anything from 6lbs to up to 60ish and only spent around 75 dollars on it. I know that these weights are going to last me a LONG time.

Mine are like these
