Its only awkward if you let it be, If you find a way to ask her to go out with you and she rejects you its most likely going to be in a friendly way... just tell her you respect whatever her reason is and there wont be much more to it unless you try to continue to beat around the bush

I'd say you don't have to stare him down, just dont be one of those people who look away as soon as eye contact is established, just hold it for a split second more then usual acknowledge the person if you want to and continue doing what your doing, its pretty simple
