We already know gyms are suffering, but what other businesses will go the way of the dinosaur or at the very least go through downsizing? Here's what I think:

1) Movie theaters - I can't imagine parents taking their young kids (with weak immune systems) to movie theaters any time soon. I have my fingers crossed that drive-ins will make a comeback and replace traditional theaters. The last movie I saw in a drive-in was Batman Forever in the early 90s. Drive-ins were always fun.

2) Amusement Parks - Disneyland might be scaled down over time, but other amusement parks will probably not survive

3) Public Pools

4) Strip Clubs - probably will suffer for the next few years, but I hope will eventually make a comeback. Sex always sells.

5) Malls - malls were already on the decline, but this might be their extinction event.

6) Hotels and convention-type businesses, event planning businesses fall in this group as well. All those upscale wedding planning services will definitely take a double hit from COVID19 and guys not wanting to get married anymore.

7) Night clubs and bars

8) The tourism industry

9) Airlines will definitely see downsizing, but is unlikely go to extinct entirely.

10) Brick and mortar Casinos- This could be the catalyst that makes online gambling legal again in the US.

The dine in restaurant model will suffer. Even before covid, pizza huts near me were closing the old dine in stores and reopening as carry out or delivery only. Restaurants have outside seating set up for now, but that is only realistic when the weather is good.

For the life of me I don't see how gyms will survive. Group classes, maybe, but on-demand weight training? I just don't see it. I really, really hope I'm wrong on that.

I'm thinking with tourism dying down, some Airbnb owners that depended on rentals to pay the mortgage or make a living will either go into foreclosure or will have to turn them into long term leases. It would depend on where they lived as I know a lot of people are still renting out Airbnb's in places like Colorado and such .

All You Can Eat buffets and movie theaters will not survive COVID. Even pre-pandemic, movie theaters weren't needed. I see gyms surviving COVID.

Bring back the drive-in's! The older peeps on here will know what they've been missing where as the younger generation might not.
there is two around that I haven't been to yet, thanks for reminder.

That's great. Just make sure you bring a worthy companion. ;) LOL

There's also two around me surprisingly still but they are over an hour away. I had a REALLY nice time with a gal last summer and it was worth the drive. Don't ask me about the movie though...

Looks like it's gonna happen: Walmart plans to convert 160 of their parking lots into drive in theaters.

When I was a kid I always imagined how cool it would be to take girls out on dates to drive-ins. It never happened because drive-ins went extinct in the late 90s. Glad to see them come back so I can do what I should have done when I was 22....

All because WE won't "survive" if we grill hamburgers together on the 4th.

There's no reason for a movie theater to exist. Movies should go straight to the video subscription services such as Netflix.

I thought you young guys were meant to be inventive. take the chick to an action movie at the drive-in and shag her spooned that way you get to do your biz and watch the movie. I don't think I am the last of the great romantics I think it must have been the guy before me

My generation caught the tail end of drive ins, and I caught some tail in the drive ins. They were great!

Cool thread.

I think the original In-and-out burger drive up & dine outside model might be the restaurant future. Many of these sit down restaurants Just won’t survive. Casual fast takeout like chipotle will be even stronger.

Also, Tesla stock has skyrocketed recently. I think that’s less about Tesla and more about direct-purchase auto sales. Who is gonna buy a car in person from a dealership during COVID?

It's the same as why Carvana is doing so well, even amongst competitors like Vroom...

As for Tesla, it's part of it but the other part is the Apple like Fan boi mentality. People will overspend on something because of the technology and because it's cool regardless of the economy as it can be an emotionally driven purchase for a lot of them. Just like people that live on food stamps but have the latest Apple iPhones... LOL

TSLA just hit $1,300 today. I'm definitely kicking myself for not buying when I saw it at $380 - I kept thinking that it would go down more and if it hit $250 I would buy in...

TSLA is a cult stock, specifically it's a cult of personality around Elon Musk.

On a positive note, I did catch a piece of TVIX during the run up..... too bad it's delisted now.
