It’s not always either or. Some of us do both. I work 12+ hour shifts generating the electricity that keeps those hospitals and the professionals up and running, not to mention the police departments, security systems and many other things that’s keeping society as civil as it is right now.

By that definition, the biggest alpha is the illegal alien working in the fields or at a meatpacking plant. Without food we’d all be dead.

I really do feel for the people who are working in health care right now because they are on the front lines, and they tend to be overworked to begin with. That's probably only going to get worse in the weeks to come.

The current crisis has given me more appreciation for all workers in our society though. Workers in the grocery and service industry are out there everyday while most of us are under quarantine. Everyday heroes.

In any event, the point is that one’s “alphaness” has no correlation with how “critical” his chosen profession is. Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos (neither of whom I particularly like) may be total nerds but they are a million times more alpha than your average cop or electrician. Almost anyone can be a cop or an electrician with proper training. Almost no one can be the founder of a multi-billion dollar company.

That’s because being an alpha means having a vision, the intelligence and grit needed to execute that vision, and also to be wiling to take risks, while at the same time possessing an excellent gut instinct to prevent you from taking stupid and unnecessary risks. In other words, being an alpha means having the ability to come out on top in a high stakes game. Doesn’t really matter what the game is. Could be military, politics, business or whatever, as long as it’s a competitive field. Alphas are competitors by definition.

Those medical people wouldn't be able to use their ambulance trucks without automobile engineers, or use their electronic health systems without IT professionals, or be able to take their 15 minute naps without bed makers. What about building engineers? Someone had to design the hospitals right? What about construction workers? Do hospitals build themselves? And let's not forget the real unsung heroes- the hazardous waste management people. Without them, hospitals wouldn't even be able to run. The amount of hazardous waste material going in and out of hospitals is tremendous. It's not a "sexy" profession that gets you noticed like a doctor but someone has to do it to keep the well oiled machine running.

Just because you are not in the front lines does not mean you are not contributing to the cause. I am sure members here have various careers that indirectly contribute somehow to the cause and society at large. Feels I'm explaining life to a 6 year old kid.

Respectfully, you'd be surprised what I can do without electricity. You should had seen some of the stuff we had to do within the air transportable hospital in a combat zone. In these times, we need BOTH... Skilled medical and IT/electrical/nuclear workers in the 21st century. One is NOT better than the other. We know what we know, and they know what they know. I wouldn't ask @Amante Silvestre to help me stabilize a trauma patient, just like I do not believe he'd ask me to man the electrical grid while he's taking care of something else. We all, as a community, work together both in times of peace and in times of crisis.

I take my hats of to them but let's be real - the majority of doctors and nurses didnt become doctors and nurses thinking this day would happen and that they wanted to be there for when it did. And the majority of doctors probably became doctors due to societal and family pressure. So the majority find themselves in a position that they never truly chose to be in. Most doctors and nurses do not enjoy helping people, especially with the way most patients treat the health service - it is basically a highly skilled customer service role where you have to babysit idiots day in day out - but you have to pay the bills somehow

I never understood it when people say that they just enjoy making people feel better. It just didn’t make sense to me.
