This guy told me my clothes look nerdy, so he took me shopping the other day at saks fifth avenue and nordstrom rack so I can look more "hip"
I bought these
3 rag and bone t-shirts: $74.99 each
pair of Lucky brand jeans: $50
socks: I don't remember the price but probably an exorbitant price too.

I am more of a Ross kind of guy and never shop at these expensive stores. but this guy kept insisting that these clothes looked good and I didn't want to look cheap so I bought them. I am thinking of returning them. Why would I pay $75 for a t-shirt when I can get the same thing at Ross/Marshalls for $20? WTF? do you think I could look just as good if I buy shirts at Ross? (obviosuly they won't be the same brand)

Rag & Bone is too preppy for me, but I do like Lucky. I've been wearing them for years. Good quality lasts a while. However, never pay retail. Lucky Brand runs sales at their web site all the time. Right now, I received an e-mail in regard to 60% off. I'd return them and just buy them online. If you have a Discover card, you can save an additional 5% off. I just bought around 500 bucks of clothes from Lucky for around 196. Need to learn to shop smart. For socks, hanes is fine unless you want those preppy metrosexual designs. Have you checked Kohls or TJ Maxx for socks?

I wear Lucky jeans, $50 bucks is a good price. Levi's from Macy's are what like, 30-40?

$75 might be a bit too much for a t shirt though. I'd have to see what kind they are exactly but I don't think I've ever paid for more than $40 or so for a printed t shirt.

You can honestly buy dress shirts that make you look better for less. T shirts and sneakers are for little kids.

And yes, for underwear, undershirts, socks, always go for like Marshalls or TJ Maxx or something. Stuff like shoes, pants, shirts you hae to be a bit more strategic about.

I've been trying mtailor for new dress shirts as well as Charles Tyrwhitt. Very happy with both.

Are those designers in the UK? YOu can't go wrong with anyting above like t shirts jeans and sneakers. It's what everyone does and it takes no effort. You don't want to be like that. Plus I think it just looks better overall.

Charles Tyrwhitt is UK based, so you have some decent quality at their price point; clothing is manufactured in Vietnam or Bangladesh I believe. Mtailor quality is good because it is made to measure. However, I am sure it's prob. from Asia or Central/South America. If someone wanted a shirt made in America, Italy, Spain, France or London, it's going to cost mucho bucks. Personally, I do not think it's worth the premium. A decade ago, I used to by Italian made shirts from Italy. However, I do not think that is necessary any longer.

The brand doesn't really matter - no one will be able to tell or even really care. If you have a blue dress shirt on i'm not going to be able to tell whether it's Hugo Boss or some lower tier designer - to me it's a blue shirt. Some people don't understand that concept and piss away a ton of money lol. To each their own.

Shoes are the only exception I think. IT pays to spend a bit more on shoes but don't ****ing spend like $500+. I have a lot of pairs of Bruno Magli, Magnanni, Bacco Bucci shoes and the most I think I spent was like $300 on a single pair. Many I got quite discounted. This I can't help, it's the southern european in me, and leather coats ;)

Agreed on the shoes. For some reason, one of the first things they look at are the shoes. I recently purchased a few pairs of Allen Edmonds during their sale a few weeks ago. They're pretty nice and comfortable. I receive complements on them all the time.. For shoes no less. Makes no sense. Anyway, it's like a 50% off sale. You can save even more with their seconds. Def. recommend them. They are American made and of good quality. Never had Bruno Magli, but did have Gucci. I did enjoy those shoes, but way too expensive. Allen Edmonds all the way.

Yes, there is an Allen Edmonds shop here in Boston. I never owned a pair of shoes from them, always go for european shoes, but the AE are supposed to be good.

There are certain principles of fashion that you should learn first. Fit, color, style and then durability. Once you understand these concepts and can apply them, the cost is irrelevant.

Just about every shirt is made of cotton and/or polyester. There is no durability advantage between a $5 shirt on closeout vs a $100 t shirt or button down. Aside from the preposterous markup of luxury stores, that is.

Try looking for independent labels and brands which charge a bit more because they have exclusive designs and artwork. I've bought many t shirts in the $20 to $75 range, which get constant compliments and questions.

It is basically impossible to justify paying more than $75 for a shirt, $200 is laughable, unless someone else is footing the bill.

I wear Levi's 505 jeans, unwashed. Of course, since I can't get length 27", I have to get them shortened.

As for shopping, I average about 1 hour per year doing that, only replacing shirts that have worn out, unless I find a good cotton, tropical short that fits, in which case I get it, since those to seem almost impossible for me to get.

Lucky Brand you can get 60% off easy, which brings the pricing down to the teens or at most high 20's. Charles Tyrwhitt, around 30 bucks a shirt with a six month guarantee. Can't beat that. Mtailor is about 50 bucks and made to measure. Decent quality for a decent price.

Allen Edmonds, amazing American made shoes and boots that last for years which are highly rated and for a fair price. Buy online through topcashback.com and save 10% or so and add a promo code from retailmenot for even more savings.

Lucky jeans are really pushing the boundaries of nerdiness for stylish nightlife gear. You might be better off getting a pair of straight leg levi's, actually. The key is fit, but Lucky jeans are pushing you into nerdy incel gear territory.

Charles Tyrwhitt is office wear, not stylish enough for a night out. Mtailor is cheap office wear. Don't wear this to look good. AE, again, office wear.

If you want to look like a nerdy pencil pusher running errands for Mr Burns, then invest in the brands listed above.

Otherwise, if you are a total novice, check out express for a fitted shirt. You have to be somewhat fit and lean to wear one of these shirts properly, so an incentive to get in shape.

Just a bit of a hint: for nightlife, think more 'rocker bad boy' rather than office geek. It doesn't matter if you're actually an office geek or bad boy rocker or not, you just don't want to look like an office geek.

I like living where most people are poor. No one really cares how expensive your clothes are. The best tip about fashion, I think, is to match it to your environment. The same $200 shirt that helps you in the city is going to get you beaten up if you wear it to a redneck dive bar.

Agree to disagree, and many people will. It's called personal style because each persons style is personal to them. What you may like may not be what I like, and vice versa. Just because you want to look like a rocker from Mötley Crüe, doesn't mean others do either.

At least 90% of guys have no idea what style is. It's not even an issue of self expression. It's simply an issue of ignorance and incompetence in presenting oneself in a way that is flattering. 90% is a very conservative figure. It's probably more like 95%.

Think about the image you want to project during a fun weekend out. Charles Tyrwhitt and mtailor are not going to help you project a fun image. More like, this dork was too lazy to change after working late at his accounting/asst manager job.
