What is all the hype about?

The part when Tyler puts a gun to the Idian guy's head!

Just don't hit bottom like the movie suggests. Even though the idea behind it is you only want to change when you hit bottom and really see your failures come to surface. So maybe hitting bottom is good, just don't do it in self-destructive behavior like the film suggests.

Everything else the film is GOLD!!!

ironicly it's exactly the type of media induced crap that the movie itself is protesting against..funny isn't it? as if teenage angst that runs into your late 30's is supposed to be cool or edgy.Give me a break already, yeah some of the concepts in the movies are alright i guess, but come on...we all make desicions and we must accept the consequences of them..right or wrong.This movie is about a guy with serious emotional issues, nothing more-making it out to be some kind of holy grail concerning man and it's masculinity issues is complete hollywood BS.Yeah, Tyler Durden is free alright...but then again, he's homeless and nothing more then a cheap used car salesman.Guys fighting eachother in basements in order to release some kind of primal rage or modern day anger inside them? like that'll solve everything. this is totally taking a step in the wrong direction if you ask me,these aren't even men-they are a bunch of lost 'boys' grown up into men that are looking for a way to get away with wreckless and stupid behaviour - thinking that it has some big greater meaning in the scheme of things..NO. This reminds me of all those late 80's films depicting lost angry youth loosing control, getting some guns,killing/robbing people and we are supposed to sympathize with that shyte..because they are 'soo hurt and lost' ,give me a break..grow up. fight club is a good movie and it's action packed and dark...it's a comedy actually and NOT meant to be taken soo literly.

I live in a world where all around me people are consumed by consumerism. They feed of their ability to feed their selfish needs. If the selfish needs are taken to the roots, shelter(dirt), food(only what is free), and clothing(to be part of the tribe), then what is left?

I'm guessing buying the red convertible and being able to mack the HB9 while having two girls waiting at your table just so they can compete over who's going to suck your d!ck tonight, is just for sh!ts and giggles.

It is a good point, that they aren't doing anything productive. Another reviewer wrote somewhere else that it is a "sanitized militia," or something like that; rebel against credit card companies? Yeah, right. Something everybody can join in on, doesn't touch anything dangerous.

So the way they try to solve their problem is improductive, like the main character Jack recognizes.

However, the problem addressed is a real one: there is no purpose anymore. You could say that Duty has been replaced by Feel-Good in our day and age, which means that we have an immature population of adult children who don't feel good at all. The movie says, anything masculine is frowned upon, as boys today are brought up by women throughout their school years. Women who become teachers are generally not the greatest admirers of masculine endeavors. (I'm not guessing, I'm thinking of statistics, that I won't bring up here because statistics are boring.)

Now, I would recommend that all guys go camping, fishing and hunting as much as possible in their teenage years; it is very relaxing, and it gives you a perspective on things. And camping is uncomfortable, and you need that. You'll feel much better afterward, once you realize you can master that environment.

The guys in the movie, they start fight clubs instead. That's another way, I guess. Much more interesting to watch in a movie than camping. And it's not such a bad idea, really: like Tyler Durden says, the idea is not to win, but to get up there and fight. That you're fat and untrained, that doesn't matter: you're working in an office, you're a product of your times and of the big city. But what matters is that you have it in you to seek change.

Yes, it touches something in us. And it's a quite cool movie, though it is also possible to make other movies dealing with the same theme.

Fight Club...a man's rebellion against both society and himself...exploring and embracing his dark side while also feeling compelled to deny it's existence.

A mind f*ck movie that guys like because it let's them break loose and rebel too...if only in his mind. It's also why so many guys seem to idolize Brad Pitt.

Ironically...Angelina Jolie played a similar role in a movie called "Girl Interrupted" with Winona Ryder. Women tend to like that movie for similar reasons.

it's only a movie and if you needed something like 'fight club' to open your eyes and truly appretiate whats important in life then you need a mighty reality check and everyone else leading 'hopless' lives in search of something 'more',well we create our destiny and we all make decisions in life..we all have choice and we all have free will.Do we need the the 42 inch plasma or the $50 sports car? no we don't, but then again- these are the same things that bring satisfaction and joy into some peoples lives..a sense of accomplishement and a sense of working towards a goal and having the dedication and motivation,the assertivness to do for ourselves- face the world and all it's hardships in order to get what we want and need in our lives.No one forces anyone to settle for less or work at dead end jobs or to have the girl that you don't really want because you were to scared to approach the ones you genuinly wanted.No one forces you to go to school,better yourself or get a higher paying job, no..we all have the responsability for our own destiny.I don't relate to the movie or the types of mentality in fight club because it's not a mindset of liberation or freedom that soo many people may see it as..it's a mindset of giving up hope and loosing all faith in oneself and giving up essentially ..that's the real message of the movie.Theres nothing rebelious or edgy about it...it's just a bunch of no life losers that are soo pent up and angry with their dead end jobs and hoplessness that they must ban together to make excuses to destroy public property and the way society is..this is nothing more then domestic terrorism..not at it's worst but definetly getting up there.

I personaly have lived through teenage homelessness,gangs,funerals of my friends ,lived through shootouts,dealt with female friends of mine being sexually assualted and raped by their relatives and alot non-sensual BS that dosen't make any sense and it's so not fair to anyone. i could easily give up,commit to a life of crime,blame everyone else for my actions and lead a life of further hopelessness..but i don't because i CHOOSE not to,better yet-i CHOOSE to lead a life that i WANT and i deserve and i refuse to accept anything less in life.The point is, everyone has a choice in life..either to dwell on the misfortunes or to rise above them.In fight club, all of those guys just gave up on themselves and were put in that situation and mindset because of it...if they never gave up on themselves in the first place then they might be living more satisfying and fullfilling lives..instead of having to engage in a semi-domestic terrorist underground boxing club for middle ages losers just to find meaning or some sort of salvation in life :yawn: but then again to each his own.I still think that the movie was hilarious:crackup:

in a sense i do sympathize with the men (in the movie) in a way because like in the movie itself- i bet that the people that relate to it in some way or the other feel lost themselves and are looking for their own sense of meaning and salvation in life..if Fight club is the answer ,then get serious help and grow the fvck up ... as a movie it's exciting visually and moody with excellent performances by all the leading actors BTW.. it's ARTISTIC in how it's done and all wrapped up together like a highly stylized music video and amusing brainless fun..but that's all it really is and that's all it was meant to be taken in as.ENTERTAINMENT....

I wasn't particularly impressed by the movie, either. It was okay, but I'm a woman, too.

Frankly, I think anyone who has lived through a lot of bad experiences like you have (I've had my share of those too) just aren't going to be left with the same impression of it. A lot of it is shock value...ya know "I can't believe they did that"...and if you see that kinda stuff all the time it just lacks any real "punch" so to speak.

It's good to see that you understand how choices work. I have a lot of respect for anyone who holds themself accountable and takes responsibility for where they are going in their lives.

For me the movie had a clear message. Not about self destruction or the mind-numbing, consumer driven society we live in these days, but about change and the associated fear.

Regret and fear are my enemy. And if there is one thing that people these days fear more than anything, it's the fear of losing everything they have! Because they are convinced that everything they have, is everything they are.

In the movie the behavior of the characters may seem self destructive at first glance, but i really think there is more to it than that. I think it's more about renewal, recreating yourself in to something better and stronger, than it is about self destruction.

Think about it. Was Tyler durden not better off towards the end of the movie than he was before that? I mean sure, he ruined his career, he blew up buildings and ruined countless properties, yes it was a big price to pay. Even in the movie, you can see that closer to then end, when the real damage is being done, he wants to stop himself from continuing on his path of destruction because it's a price he is not willing to pay.

He was not willing so his alter-ego paid it for him and paid what he had to pay to change himself. Because that is what the movie is really about! The change of Tyler Durden from what he was (bored, depressed, frustrated, without goal or purpose and hopelessly attached to the things he owned) to what he became at the end of the movie (free, confident, strong, a leader and detached from impermanent and useless crap).

It's the story of one mans journey towards becoming who he wanted to be. And this one man stirred up a bunch of dust on his path (lol). The movie sent the clear message that you CAN change, you just have to want to change and have to be willing to do whatever it takes! Fear, doubt, disbelief, we have to let it all go and just roll with it! And fortunately for us, we won't have to blow up buildings and set up a nationwide cult of nutjobs to change ourselves.

And he didn't just recreate himself, but many other in the movie did so as well. They changed their pathetic lives around to a point where they were more happy and complete. However you view their lives in the movie, they were happier because of the pain and effort they went through to change themselves. Whether it's 'wrong' what they all did or not is irrelevant, this is fiction, a story! The underlying truth and message of the movie is not "go all out and do whatever you want and blow sh1t up and you'll be free to do anything"... nah, for me it was "you have the power to change in to who you want to be, if you have the strength to do whatever has to be done".

Well if some beat down, depressed, skinny, insomniac has the strength to change, so do i!

Now I'm not saying that this movie flagged a crucial understanding in me that i had the power to change. That would be overestimating the movies power, but i will say that for me it was reinforcing and the message was clear.

Asside from the message this movie held for me, it was also amusing to watch a strong male rolemodel at work (Tyler Durden), even if he was a little screwy in the head ;-).

material items enrichen our lives, but they should'nt totally define it-nor should they define us as a person or our quality of life- i aggree on that point in the movie... plus TD sure knows how to deck himself out in peacocking gear dosen't he? i can't lie, i actually own a red jacket just like his in the movie and yes, i actually did have that exact messed up scruffy hair cut when it was popular also.For the ones who haven't read the book yet by Chuck Palaniuk..READ IT TODAY, you will be much more pleased with the book and get an even deeper insight into what fight club was really about and NOT what the movie portrayed it as.The book is awsome,littered with a ton of 'helpfull tips' along the way!! i actually met the author in a bookstore, i had the urge to go up shake his hand and say - 'security is tight as a drum..sir..' i bet that's what everyone else does anyways...

the main character is better off in the end of the movie IMO only because he realised quickly before it was too late the terrible and horrible things he has done in the first place..he also has a hole in the side of his face (and that big flickering penis at the end of the film sliced in was no consolation prize either thank you very much!) READ THE BOOK, i liked the ending much better and the overall feel was totally different then the movie itself.IMO the book is a work of ART and the movie was ENTERTAINMENT..weird and contracdictory ain't it? ( maybe i should learn how to spell the word before i use it eh?! :crackup: )

the dominant thoughts and overall feelings of ones life should be a strong indicator of the quality of it..if you aren't happy about it , do something about it...thats all it comes down to,making that first decision to ,commiting to it and taking action immedialty, also taking responsability for whatever may arise but also flexable enough to change courses if need be..oh yeah, don't forget to organize a group of angry shirtless middle aged men to engage in violent and brutal acts towards eachother and society ,don't forget to also burn all of your material possessions and move in a dilapidated house in the industrial part of town with that rotton fart smell in the kitchen no really..:wave:

And the jacket is totally pimp! . I been looking for a jacket like that for a while but been to lazy to REALLY look for one, plus red doesn't really suit me to well (atleast not that type of red)

I think that movie is the reason people treat brad like a sex god. Every time there's the scene where brad pitt is walking through the bar with his sunglasses and his red leather jacket and his slick hairstyle, somebody who's watching the movie with me points out how they want to screw him or be him.

Fight Club, the original book by Chuck Palanuik, was in many ways a socia-political statement ranting against the masculinity identity crisis imposed by overdependence on materiality. It is meant to be a dark satire, and as such, while hinting on deeper underlying issue, does not attempt to preach a gospel of sorts.

It's a really good movie for anyone to see (not just DJs).

I think part of what attracts "DJ"'s to this movie is Tyler Dudens character, though. He looks bad ass, he's a leader, he's intelligent (and full of great quotes), he's mysterious, and he'll have sex with your girlfriend (then ask if you want to finish her up). He's pretty much what DJs strive to be.

he is a non realistic ficitcious character.

unless you want to be 35, broke, broken face, no kids, no family..and u have a bunch of guys beating each other like ur all some great hard asses.

I dont think most young people idolize the movie because it shows we are dependent on material things.
