Hey guys,

For most of my adult life I've worn contacts but for the last year and a half my eyes have been irritated by wearing them and so I've been stuck wearing glasses ever since.

I know that there are some guys out there that look good in glasses but I'm not sure that I'm one of them and besides I'm sick of dealing with them.

Another question is this, is it fair to say that, on average, MOST guys, not ALL but MOST, look better without glasses?

Lasik is a very real possibility for me so give me your thoughts.

Good thread, I've pondered the idea of getting lasik myself. Contacts bug my eyes after I wear them for a while so I wear glasses often. I'd like to hear what people think who've had the operation done.

Three things

Find your nearest Lasik provider, so when the time comes for you to grab your balls you will know where, or where NOT to go. Go there now, before you decide and get some pamphlets, especially the ones about their testing procedures and the doctors medical background.

Do a search on the internet for any lawsuits filed against him. Find out why half were thrown in the garbage. Investigate his lawyer as well if they seem sketchy.

Find out who does the cash counting, who gives the quotes, and how much it will cost you. Try and barter the price lower by discussing your situation, and giving them compliments that they fish for. Tell them you will write them testimonials and that sort of thing...

GL, I'll get lasik as soon as I feel that glasses are hindering to me. At the moment, people laugh at me, and my one armed glasses.

If you can afford it, I see no reason not to get it. I would if I needed glasses/contacts.

With the cost of glasses or contacts and all that is associated with them, and the recent price drop in lasik (some docs here charge only about $300 US per eye), lasik looks like a good investment to me. If I needed vision correction, I'd consider it a "no brainer."

Are you for it or agin it man? Don't beat around the bush:crackup:

Seriously though, thanks for the feedback guys. I do have all the pamplets (info) and payment options planned out. If I decide to go for it, it is just a matter of making the appointment.

I thought saying I don't think I need it yet was good enough for you...

This is where you tell us all of the problems you are having because of wearing contacts. Time to discuss with us where your problems lie in life that we can point out.

It's my way of saying thanks to sosuave, if you discuss all of your problems with people out loud(like a girl;)) you solve the problem for yourself. I can already see some people responding to some AFC's post with "you said it yourself"

So, what you hate about your contacts that are so bad?

I had it done

Make sure you get the "custom lasic" done. it may cost more but you get better results. I just got the regular stuff, but it still a lot better then wearing glasses.

some things you should know though;

-once you get it, the recovery process is about a year, and even after that, your eyes are gona be more sencetive.
-"custom lasic" will give you a better chances of "not getting glare" which can be a problem if driving at night.
-The difference in vision, between glasses and lasic is really small. Don't expect to be seeing like a hawk, clear and crisp. it aint gona happen. you'll still see 20-20 (or so you'll be told) but the difference won't too noticable. the only difference now is, you don't have frames limiting your view.

if you have any questions let me know

(oh, and don't just have anybody do it. I was lucky, i have one of the pioneers in the technology living in my town, but try and find the best guy you can.

Depending on your age, you will eventually go right back to wearing glasses. I just had mine done at the age of 36 and they told me 5 - 6 years from now I will need glasses again. Still, nice to be able to wear normal sunglasses without a perscription...

yes, but it will be for your near vision (if you fixed the far one) right?

the younger you are, the longer you have.

I talked to my doctor today. She said that chances are when I reach my mid 40's I will have to have glasses for reading only. But other than that I shouldn't experience a great change in my overall vision.

I plan on doing custom lasik. I'm tentatively scheduled for March 1st.

I see that at least one person doesn't think I should get lasik, any reason behind that?

Here's the deal:

My mother just got this done about a year ago, and had, I guess, average results. One eye went to 20/20, but the other 20/40, and has commented numerous times that is DOES bother her. I believe results like this are fairly common.

Hmm..this may not happen to you, actually most likely not, but my uncle has told me several times of a neighbor that got LASIK, yet constantly wears glasses, just as if he had never gotten the operation? Naturally, I'm sure it is more of an exception, but still...

Keep in mind I have not read your post or others much, just skimmed:

You will also have to pass a test to ensure that you are a valid candidate to receive treatment. I believe much of this has to do with the degree of refractive error of your eyes. If you are in the EXTREMELY poor vision group, around -7 to -10 diopters, you could be rejected much easier, but -2, etc., which I assume you are likely to be around, should get you in no problem.

ONE OTHER THING!!!

Go to google, type on 'Laser eye surgery horror stories.'

My friend, although the incidence of such things happening are quite slim, if it does, your life would be ruined.

Sure, it sounds like chicken little, and there is a very small chance of something EXTREMELY severe happening, but who knows.

And yeah, night vision will most likely suffer(for driving mainly). My mom had this side effect too.

Make the right move for yourself,

Ryan

I wear contacts, if I could afford to throw a couple thousand bucks on laser eye surgery I would definetely do it.

Think of the greater amount of freedom to not having to have to wear glasses or even contacts.

Cutting up your eyes, whether it's with a knife or a laser is not something to be toyed with given that you don't get a secon shot. I've heard of way too many side effects like poor night vision or double vision etc. I'm trying hypnosis for mine. I'll let you know when I'm cured.

Here is a link to a respectable site by Dr. Mercola

Lol...disregard Legolas' link. Presbyopia can not be cured by sun exposure or any of that other crap!

I wonder if it was a joke?

Hypnosis to what??????

And yes, the younger you are, the greater chance you will continue to lose vision even if you get the procedure, because the operation makes it so your eyes are still like glasses. If your vision has not stablized, you will most likely eventually need an enhancement(I think they do this free, not sure though) or glasses.

Cheers

I'm not voting in the poll, since A) it's too black and white, and B) the decision is ultimately yours.

But I do have one suggestion, in addition to the others I've read (which are good, by the way).

If you are going to do it, do it on one eye. If it's successful, do it on the other. If the one eye goes blind because of an error, you will still be able to see. One eye is infinitely better than blindness. And of course, it'd probably be good if you did it first on the eye with poorer vision, assuming of course you want the surgery. If the first eye goes blind, I'd call it quits and refuse to go any farther, no matter what the statistics say.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this. It seems like common sense to me.

Hehe, no one said presbyopia can be cured by sun exposure!! The link was mainly to show the dangers of LASIK, but the guy has some more information which pertains to the Bates Method. Whether or not you believe in the Bates Method i'ts up to you my friend. i put it up for the LASIK stuff

As far as hypnosis goes, I have this theory that poor eyesight has to do with emotional problems (blockages) from early choldhood. This is well documented scientifically, in fact stuttering is purely an emotional problem, and once you figure out what the blockage is and clear it up, you're cured! I've been working on identifying what the blockage is for me.

If you say this is bullsh*t, then it's your opinion and noone is asking you to change it. All I know is I'd rather wear glasses or contacts then do LASIK no matter how advanced the science gets.
