Japanese companies are worried that herbivorous boys aren't the status-conscious consumers their parents once were. They love to putter around the house. According to Media Shakers' research, they are more likely to want to spend time by themselves or with close friends, more likely to shop for things to decorate their homes, and more likely to buy little luxuries than big-ticket items. They prefer vacationing in Japan to venturing abroad.

Grass-eating boys' commitment phobia is not the only thing that's worrying Japanese women. Unlike earlier generations of Japanese men, they prefer not to make the first move, they like to split the bill, and they're not particularly motivated by sex. "I spent the night at one guy's house, and nothing happened—we just went to sleep!" moaned one incredulous woman on a TV program devoted to herbivores. "It's like something's missing with them," said Yoko Yatsu, a 34-year-old housewife, in an interview. "If they were more normal, they'd be more interested in women. Interesting article, yeah this could well happen in the Western world, it should. I am curious about how well accepted escorts are in Japan. Of course, if there's a girl over at my place I'll get her into bed. I'm not an idiot. But I'm just not really going out of my way anymore. My time is spent doing things that I enjoy, and my money is spent on "small luxury items" that enhance my life personally - I like having quality items around, not some garbage that'll break in two years. But I buy them with the money I have, after I've put something aside.

Never married, debt-free, mortgage-free, travel skeptic, right here. I can empathise. The nesting thing is lost on me though.

I consciously go through this process whenever I'm tempted to make a major purchase: Who is this really for? How is it going to enhance my daily/weekly quality of life? Probably saved me tens of thousands over the last three years or so. Particularly if you're tempted to get an item because you think it will make you more attractive - consider how much pvssy it's actually going to get you (little to none I'd suggest) - and then consider how much pvssy you could get if you just paid for it directly. I'm not suggesting that pvssy should be the overarching consideration when you buy something, or even advocating prostitution, it's just a useful way to put purchases in perspective.

There are nothing wrong with these things in themselves. I have something I tell people if the conversation topic comes up..... "People let their possessions own THEM instead of owning their possessions.". This is the trap. When people forego living a full life for the sake of upgrading constantly or accumulating a ton of stuff. In the end, what enriches our lives the most and what we will remember are good EXPERIENCES.

I can experience a castle or a huge estate without owning it. Just take a tour. And when you've left you've enjoyed it without the hassles of upkeep.

By becoming SLAVES to materialism men have become too busy working to fund their own slavery. They become so busy (and tired) that they forego pursuing their own passions. How many great things could have been discovered? How many new inventions made? How many fun and exciting lives lived? This is another example of sour grapes writ large. I've lived in Japan for years and Japanese men are the biggest beta AFCs you'd ever meet.

They are herbivores because THEY HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE.

You can only "choose" to forego women if you can actually GET women.

Wikipedia's definition acknowledeges it as fact. Japan could hardly be described as a country where militant feminism has prevailed. This generation of herbivores as they are called may eventually come up trumps, and end up being more alpha for their choice. If one were to delve deeper into modern western men, it is possible to see a similar trend emerging. I can think of a few guys including myself that share some of the herbivore traits.
