I've been seeing a lot of spots on the news lately about Samantha Brick, a British columnist who wrote an article complaining about the downsides of being beautiful. She's been taking a lot of flak about being arrogant and about not really being that attractive. Here's her original column:

First off, I think most of the criticism toward her is sour grapes. I saw a clip of Barbara Walters showing her picture and saying "She isn't that beautiful". I thought that was kind of funny because Barbara Walters wasn't pretty when she was younger, let alone now. Sour grapes.
Most of the coverage I've seen has focused on how she claims to be so exceptionally beautiful. I don't think she's saying that at all, she's just saying she's good looking. She says in the article "I'm no Elle McPherson".
There's a comment in the article where a guy says "I am sorry, but this woman is not even remotely attractive". Well, that's clearly not true. She's not super gorgeous by any means, but I don't find it hard to believe that she gets attention for her looks. Especially today, when most women are probably 50 lbs. overweight. I think she looks at least above average, considering her age (41). She looks better in some pictures than others.
Also, I think she's right when she says a lot of women will hate or resent other women if they are attractive.
Finally, I'm sure there are drawbacks to being pretty. But I'm also sure the benefits outweigh drawbacks, so she shouldn't be complaining. I'm thinking she just needed something to write about in her column and came up with this.
