World's heaviest man marries in Mexico

MONTERREY, Mexico – The world's heaviest man has tied the knot. Manuel Uribe, who hasn't left his bed in six years, married his longtime girlfriend Claudia Solis Sunday in northern Mexico.

Wearing a white silk shirt with a sheet wrapped around his legs, Uribe smiled as Solis, 38, walked down a flight of stairs wearing a strapless ivory dress, a tiara and hot-pink lipstick.

He later broke into tears as a notary declared the couple husband and wife in a civil ceremony attended by more than 400 guests. For the traditional first dance as newlyweds, Uribe and Solis held hands and swayed to a romantic ballad.

A popular local norteno band played accordion-heavy tunes at the reception, which featured a banquet of meat and buttered vegetables.

Uribe's mother, Orquedia Garza, said the groom steered clear of the five-tier wedding cake.

"He didn't break his diet," she told The Associated Press. "His doctors are here and they are watching him very closely."

The wedding, which was closed to most media, will be featured in an upcoming Discovery Channel documentary on Uribe, the 43-year-old former mechanic said.

"I have a wife and will form a new family and live a happy life," Uribe told hordes of reporters earlier as they followed him through the streets of Monterrey.

A flatbed truck was brought in to tow his custom-made bed decorated with a canopy, flowers and gold-trimmed bows to the wedding at a local event hall. Two police patrol cars escorted him ahead of a long line of traffic.

Uribe tipped the scales in 2006 at 1,230 pounds (560 kilograms), earning him the Guinness World Record as the world's heaviest man.

He has since shed about 550 pounds (250 kilograms) with the help of Solis, whom he met four years ago.

Uribe said he's gunning for a new title: world's greatest weight loser.

Compared to him, ya but come on, she's pretty corn-fed and certainly not pretty! Hope they are happy ....

My god, they halued his ass away on the back of a tow truck like an elephant to the wedding ceremony.

It really is sad to see all this, especially since he attributed his partial weight loss due to the support of this woman and not because he was strong enough to do it himself.

This story is fishy in so many ways.

The man is as fat as fvck, can barley move and there is no way he can fvck. How can any self respecting woman be with this dude?! There has to be a catch in all of this.

Insurance money, worldwide publicity, access to high-quality health professionals, etc...are all the reasons why she is with him.

You can't tell me that she is with him because of genuine attraction towards him. You really think she wants to get banged by him?

Plus, let's not forget the power she will have over him and can get him to do whatever she wants by justifying it as "I'm the only girl who has loved you" and "I helped you lose all those pounds", etc.

But hey more power to him if he is happy and satisfied. Even though it's for all the wrong reasons.

Many guys that have deformities or morbid obesity end up with wives. I've even heard of Siamese twins that managed to get married. It's a big world and chances are, no matter how physically ailed you are, there is at least one woman out there somewhere who would look past your physical disabilities.

I'm also curious about the woman that married this guy, because she's fairly normal looking and could have easily met a normal guy with no problem. What attracted her to him, who knows, but I'd like to hear an interview and find out.

Yeah, but even still, when you look at the diet of someone that is that obese, they usually aren't living off spinach and carrots either. Bad metabolism or not, you aren't going to get fat unless you are putting fats and sugar into your body in the first place.

Yes, it is.

I understand if the guy weighed 250-350 pounds and had "no idea" how he got fat.

But when you get SO fat that you can't even GET UP, then you can't tell me that it wasn't your fault.

Fat people need to take responsibility and hold themselves accountable for eating bad food and not keeping healthy. Nobody pried open your mouth and poured gallons of fat in you while they held a gun to your head.

true. I think we can attest this to the same reason why women love jerks. Most women want a man that is "unique" and a jerk is unique since most guys are afc, and this guy is unique in his own way.

uniqueness goes a long way.

She's a thoroughly normal looking woman. Won't turn your head in disgust or admiration. Probably looks like most the women walking around in Mexico. She could find a guy that is very normal/average like she is that would find her to be a catch.

Btw, Mexico is a lot poorer than we are, but not sure I'd call it a "3rd world ****hole" either. Kinda depends on where you go. It has its ****ty parts, but there are some pretty nice colonial towns in the center of Mexico too. There are people in Mexico that are loaded and they have a sizable middle class. Not that I'm saying it's all rosey but they're nowhere on the level of a Haiti or Bangladesh.

She looks happy. That is what's important. Why is everyone so quick to judge on this one?

Best of luck to them, as a married couple. She inspired him to lose over 500 lbs! That's quite an achievement..

I found this story quite uplifting actually. Perhaps, we can all learn from this.
