I've been doing some experiments with online profiles for a while now. Here are some of the results.

Pic with really generic male profile seems to generate a couple emails per week in and of itself. If I add a blog entry this goes up to about an extra 2 emails, usually received within 24 hours of the new blog entry.

Same pic with improved profile generates about six emails per week in and of itself (with me contacting no users). Again, blog entry will add about an extra 2 emails within 24 hours then it's usually back to normal.

Generic female profile with pic of fairly average woman (6.5) generates 6 emails within 24 hours. LOL. My results did vary quite a bit depending on the site though. I did not find the outragious claims gurus often site, but still 6 a day is quite a bit for someone who is making absolutely no effort to build a descent profile, promotoe the profile, or even bother to send a wink.

So anyway, let's see what we got in Miss Clause's mailbag:

First, pretty much none of the people using online dating seem to incorporate anything remotely interesting into the username. To me, this is blowing a big chance to get noticed in the inbox. Only maybe occasionally will someone bother to use a cool city in their name to draw someone in, nothing more than that have I noticed. They also use their real (boring) names like Bob or Bill, SNOOORING, I'd actually get my name legally changed if my parents did this to me for my own personal satisfaction if nothing else.

Nice guy rants. Man, there are tons of these tools out there. A good 30% of guys are sending emails about how nice they are, some even talk about their mothers in the first email (LOL), and they are often 500 miles away. Why would anyone other than a desperate man want to try meeting someone 500 miles away! That's just insasne.

Sending a list of qualifications with no real content or ever actually speaking to the person being written to. This screams boring or copy-n-paste job, maybe both.

Men saying if things go well the woman can come live with them. They are going to let strange women from 1,000 miles away move in? Why? That's dangerous and totally unselective!

Finally, guys who admit they suck with women and want to pay all a woman's expenses and she can still "date other guys" as long as she's willing to stay with him. I kid you not, thephoney profile got several variants of this, as well as the (at least more respectable) man seeking a trio. LOL.

Now, I see why it has always been so easy to get poon off Internet chicks :)

Seriously if anyone on the forum uses dating sites, I really suggest creating a fake account just to see exactly what kind of stuff is typically floating around out there. I think it also highlights how easy it is to avoid these things and differentiate.

A properly generated email, only sent to users who have logged in within the last 3 days, should have an extremely high rate of getting RE'd. If most mail is not getting RE'd, then it's because it's the lost needle in the haystack. Send your fake profile an email. Is it identical to all the others?

Although one could work on building some kind of super sterioded profile that gets big-time results (I only spent about an hour on my latest creation, so that my partially explain the relatively number of emails received), I can't imagine this is easier or less time consuming than just crafting an email that gets results.

Those are all free sites. I never use pay sites, well, becauseI am too cheap.

Free sites aren't going to give you a good test. It's like sarging on MySpace, women have nothing invested what so ever. They get tons of replies to ads without needing to reply to any of them. It's different on pay sites, people want to get their money's worth. I suggest checking out Player Supreme's thread on Internet Dating 101. He does some crazy Gunwich type stuff, it's pretty funny yet insightful.

I've made amazing discovery -- if I post a pic of myself unshaved filthy and overweight I only get 3 or 4 views, but if I post a pic of a buff male model I start getting hits instantly.....................

It's stating the obvious but when I was a slim Joe Bloggs I got nothing - maybe a few messages from ugly chicks every few months chancing it that I might reply to them. ..you know, like when you're out and fat chicks try chat you up.....uhhhhhhh. It's insulting. ANYWAY!

As soon as I put on a ton of muscle and put my photo up with my shirt off I got TONS of messages from chicks. Even gay guys I'm afraid to say were messaging me stuff like "I hope you aren't offended but you're real hot, why are all the good guys straight" and "I know you're straight but do you wanna chat on MSN" .. luckily I only got a FEW of those and the overwhelming majority was from chicks, some of them pretty hot too.

You can either laugh or cry - know one thing, it's mirrored in real life. Muscles work wonders for female attention.. just don't visit any gay clubs.

Interesting stuff. I've been doing some experiments with craigslist lately, trying out different strategies. I've been getting some good responses to a real simple email I drafted up, only 2-3 lines and a picture of a zombie, haha. I wrote a blog post about it here if anyone wants read it in more detail.

The whole internet sarging thing is definitely worth taking a look at considering the high volume of women now online.

Interesting you mention Craigslist, a TA found this while doing research for a paper. Make of it what you will.

I really don't know what you guys are doing, but I consistantly get at the very least a 2 or 3 responses within an hour of placing an ad, about a dozen within 12 hours and sometimes nearly 2 dozen in the first day or so.

I placed an ad at 1am last night, which I spent less than an hour putting together, and by morning I had responses from a lawyer, a professional athelete, an Anthropoligist that just moved back from Rome, one dinner proposal and one offer to get together for drinks without me even responding. Those were the decent ones. The rest didn't interest me.

I'm average looking. I'm only 5'9" and 170 (certainly not buff). I even wrote about being a geek to see how that would work out. I'm almost tempted to create a fake hotmail account, give you guys the login info, create an ad using that account, and let you guys log in to see the results for yourselves.

Guys...name names please! What are those websides? I've been doing online dating for about 4-5 years now and I am above average looking. I can say I only get maybe 1-2 e-mails a month from women I haven't initiated contact first. The ratio of men to women is about 10-1 on any dating site and even fat and ugly women get lots of e-mails. Internet dating works for WOMEN! not men.
As far as a responce rate...I get about 70% responce and then 10% will go on a date after a lenghty correspondence.
I don't recomend online dating to anyone....waste of time! I am doing it because I got a severe aproach anxiety.

Here is what I suggest: Find all the truly free sites, not the sites that you have to pay every freaking time you want to email someone. Look them up on Alexa and see what kind of traffic the place gets. If it doesn't have any traffic at all, then it might not be worth even posting a profile. There was one specifically I can think of, jump something I used, there just wasn't enough people on there to even find more than a handful close to me. As far as which specific free sites work well for me, it could be different in your area anyway. It's not really information I provide since you could easily find these and test yourself (there is only a very few truly free dating sites that are of any size).

I have had a lot of luck on hotornot in the past, but unfortunately, you have to pay a small free (it's not much). I haven't used it in the last few months, and I suspect myspace is detracting from hotornot's useage for social networking anyway.

Alternatively, some people recommend pay sites like match.com. I have used match.com's website. I found match.com was very good for hot, older women. I did not really find many women under 25 there, but maybe I was searching for older chicks at the time (been a couple years now). I did nail several hotties off there, but it's expensive. I also found a lot of women on match to be pretty intelligent. I do suspect I was "set up" with a person working for match in one or two cases, but I cannot prove it and it could just be my fragile male ego protecting itself. PM if you want details about that.

I bet women get 5hit like this on a regular basis. That's why you REALLY need to be unique and stand out to get their attention.

Exactly. And guys get pissed off when they don't get a response to an email like that. I mean come on, a woman can get 20 of these emails a day, each one as boring as the next. Why should she waste her time writing back to these guys. And the ones that do get flaming emails in return from AFCs with fragile egos. I swear, if guys would just make an effort to say something interesting and unique they would have a better chance online because their competition are mostly losers.

WHile I'm waiting for my ride, I thought I might add that few guys seem to try adding as "friends" for the sites that allow that. It might be worth trying to add as friends rather than try winking which hoardes of men do.

Ever think that they're doing that as an attempt for social proof so that people visiting their page will think that they actually know hot women?
