Well, I raised a stink on this thread: http://www.sosuave.net/forum/showthread.php?t=184618
Recently, though, I got another girl on the popular "Plenty-o-Fish" dating website to tell me about some of the experiences she's had. I had been talking to her previously and I saw her online, so I asked her, "how's fishing". In response to that, I got something of a frustrated lament.
This is a girl who seems to be pretty straight-up...has her life together, runs her own business, good family, fairly good looking. Might be breaking the "8"s...I'd have to meet her in person first to tell.
Some of the more interesting comments:
- One guy she got on a date with told her he was being evaluated by Social Security for disability due to "mental health issues". He swore he was just trying to "work the system". When she broke contact with him, though, he would NOT stop texting her.
- Another she says "lied about so much I had no idea what was the truth".
- Another she dated for a while until she found out he had "an ex-gf that hadn't moved out yet".
- She said she could start her own porn website with all the pen!s pics she received...completely unsolicited. She also said guys would vid-chat with her and just start taking their pants off. This is probably in addition to the "hey baby I'd like to" messages that we all know about.
I guess this kind of explains why the girl from the previous thread went berserk over what I saw as a MILD suggestive statement that I thoroughly expected her to shrug off as "idle banter".
For women on common dating websites, the experience is HELL. Everyone laughs about "dating internet weirdos", but on PoF at least, the joke is actually a scary truth. Girls lie about two things...their weight and how many kids they have. Guys lie about EVERYTHING, and the greater majority of them are either sex-crazed perverts or creeps who women won't go NEAR in real-life.
That REALLY stacks the odds against a "normal guy" trying to get through. It doesn't mean you can't "go fishing", but don't be surprised if women don't trust a word you say, and it sounds like you NEED to tread on eggshells with regard to sex, at least until you meet in person, and then you can go with the subtle eye-contact/kino stuff you would normally use.
In fact, you may be better off creating an interesting profile and letting the women find YOU.
I've also heard that it's a little better on some of the "pay sites", because casual weirdos often won't invest MONEY when they know their chances of landing a girl aren't good. (free probing doesn't hurt anything) But I have yet to test that.
All I can say is that suddenly, after this conversation, I understand. I mean, I expected a lot of guys on there to be socially awkward and girls to get turned off, but when she started talking about wang-pics, I was just dumbstruck.
Oh, and if you're ribs-showing thin, don't take a shirtless pic. Girls over the age of 18 don't find that attractive. Hit the gym. In fact, shirtless pics in general = automatic rejection. Apparently THAT is a lot more prevalent than I thought as well.
